My seervis to all my brothers, sisters, relations and freinds generally, and perticularly be carfull, I pray, in sending the inclosed x). Give it with my respects to Robert, whose good prayers I yearnestly crave. I will write to you as often as I can from all places have conveniency; if you write to me, direct it for me at Aleppo and let Mr Barrowes give it the feirst shipe that comes for Scanderoune * 2), and it will certanly come to him who is and allwase will bee your truly loving brother WILLIAM CLIFTON. 2. Deare Brother, Vienna, J[une] 3) 1676. My last to you was from Venice, in which, as now in this, I doe and ever shall with you condole the death of my nephu Cuthbert, though I hope it to be false, as not having had any news of it from your seife or anyone out of England, but only from Rome. The last I received from you was before Christmas 7 or 8 munthe since, which doth not a litle truble mee, for I thought infallibly to have heard from you at Venice before my departure from thence to Vienna, where now I am. We weare 17 days in our iourny and had very hot wether, but saw several pritty neat tounes in the wae, as allsoe a most pleasant cuntry on both sides the Alpes. The tounes weare these: Trevisa 4), a fine toune; Palma Nova, the most regular fortification in the wole world; it hath beene 60 years in building by the Venetians and is not finished; Aquilea, antiently a famus citty, but now quite destrouied; then Udena 5), a neat citty and indifferent large at the entring of the Alpes. Afterwards in Germany the feirst toune of note was Philake 6) a most pleasant litle toune, then Clagenfort, a pritty toune allsoe, then Gratts, a swite place, neatly built, in which the Emperor hath a palace, where is to five the Quine of Poland douager 7), sister to the now Emperor. After that in tow days wee came to Newstatt, where we found the Emperor, the ould Empres 8), the Quine of Poland and the Priscipessa Anna, both this Emperors sisters; the latter is to bee given to the King of Spane 9). The Emperor himselfe is a very meane person, noe great maiesty in him, but very holy and good. He was going to ou[re La]dy 10) of Zell to performe his devotions in order to hi[s intended] 10) maridge, which, as is supposed, will be with the Duke of Nuberges daughter11), by reason her mothers fertility, who hath had 17 or 18 children. The Prince her brother is now with the Emperor and will accompany him in his progres. Having thus seene the cort we came in one day to Vienna, an extrordnary pritty toune, though not great. The Emperors tresure with the collection of pictures, st[at]ues 10), medalls, are not to bee exprest or valued, far exceeding either that of Florence, Venice or any I ever saw in Italy, nay even Loretto itselfe. x) Nicht mehr vorhanden. 2) Iskenderun, bzw.
