THE SPIRIT HELPS Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know to pray as we ought. Romans 8:26. Does man need help to breathe? The answer would seem to be No,for nothing comes more naturally than breathing. Nevertheless, there are times when artifical respiration is required to aid the failing breath. Does a child of God need help to talk to its heavenly father? It is tempting to answer: 'No', or at least: 'Only rarely'. After all, what ought to be more natural than prayer to God on the lips of a Christian? The fact is that we need - and receive - help every -time we atter a prayer. . This is so, first, simply because 'we do not know how to pray as we ought'. The problems with prayer are legion, ranging from lacking the desiere, having no time, or not knowing what to say, to thinking of it in terms of a shopping list, using meaningless jargon, or praying for selfish reasons. Secondly, the Spirit does not hover araund. only the periphery of prayer; he lives at the very heart- of it. 'Pray at all times in the Spirit' (Eph.6:l8). The Spirit of God is the sustainer of Christian life. We are 'led by the Spirit'(Gal.5: 18), and bear the 'fruit of the Spirit' (Gal.5:22)..JesUs himself said: "When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth' (John 16:13). It is not surprising, therefore, to find that 'the Spirit himself intercedes for us with sighs too deep for words'. There is comfort in the thought that we never pray alone. Any difficulties we may be having, we need not face without -help. The disciples once asked Jesus to teach them how to pray. (Luke 11:1), and he taught them the greatest prayer of all. The Holy Spirit will not disappoint anyone who sincerely asks for help with prayer. Words sometimes fail to express what we feel. When we come into the presence of God: in worship, in Communion, in the hearing of' his Word or in prayer, the Holy Spirit, the great interpreter, is always there. He knows our every desire and need, every joy and failure, and he brings to us message of love and peace from the heart of God. Rev.Árpád Breglec. 14.
