Scientific reviewer By its rich historical stocks which cover various areas, the Archives of Manuscripts and Rarities of the Library of Budapest University is, since its creation, an important place of research and study of the European history of civilisation. The collection which forms part of the European cultural heritage is a document of the history of a cultural region. Its voluminous stock of manuscripts and ancient prints is indispensable even to the international research. The documents help essentially the researches in the late Middle Ages

' and in the early modern history, ecclesiastical history, university history and history of civilisation. Similarly to other archives of manuscripts and book-collections this Archives not only preserves a significant material of knowledge but, being the incarnation of the cultural remembrance, it plays also a prominent role by awakening the actual society to the consciousness of being historical. The history of the collections shows the periods in the systematization of the library stock and the processes of the organizing and transmitting of knowledge. 40
