A hajadon lányok anyjuktól eltérően nem két gyertyát gyújtanak, hanem egyet. Amint egy kislány képessé válik arra, hogy megértse a szombat eszményét, és el tudja mondani az áldást - hároméves kora körül -, már kaphat szüleitől egy gyertyatartót, és elkezdheti a szombati fények gyújtását. A kislány előbb gyújtson gyertyát, mint anyja, hiszen lehet, hogy a mamának még sejtenie kell egy kicsit. Szokás néhány pénzdarabot tenni a cedákáperselybe a gyertyák meggyújtása előtt. A szombati gyertyákat pénteken este, pontosan 18 perccel naplemente előtt kell meggyújtani. A kislányok közvetlenül előtte gyújtsanak. PROCEDURE FOR LIGHTING THE SHABBAT CANDLES The woman (or young girl) lights the candles then spreads her hands out around the candles drawing her hands inwards in a circular motion three times to indicate her acceptance of the sanctity of the Shabbat. She then covers her eyes with her hands and says the blessing: Blessed are You, C-d our Lord King of the universe who has hallowed us through His commandments and has commanded us to kindle the lights of the holy Shabbat. She then uncovers her eyes to behold the Shabbat lights. It is customary to give a few coins for charity before lighting the candles. CAUTION: The candles must be lit before sunset. It is prohibited and is a desecration of the Shabbat to light the candles after sunset.
