ON THE THERMODYNAMIC AND METALLURGICAL EXAMINATION OF THE ACTION OF NICKEL, THE ACTIVITY OF SULPHUR DISSOLVED IN IRON BY LÁSZLÓ SZÜCS Special literature on metallurgy has not yet decided unanimously the question of the influence of nickel on the activity of sulphur in the case of nickel steel. The opinions of the majority of research workers on the action of nickel - as it has been pointed out in the present article - are contradictory. Many of them are of the opinion that nickel diminishes the activity of sulphur. The research of the author has proved that nickel exerts a negative influence on the reaction of the desulphurization of steel as well as on the process of the oxidization of sulphur from steel and favours the absorption of sulphur by steel from gas-phase containing sulphur-dioxide. The difficulty of the desulphurization of steel containing nickel, however, may be due to some other factors. The mechanism of the reaction of the desulphurization may be changed by the presence of nickel as well. 380
