Marschall, M. and Proctor M. C. F.: Aspects of stress tolerance in bryophytes

120 Marschall, M. and Proctor M. C. F. the presence of UV-B absorbing materials in the cell wall represent the protective mechanism against UV-B in bryophytes. 3.5 Temperature stress and tolerance in bryophytes There is a close relationship between temperature tolerance and the water content of the cells. The high and low temperatures are less harmful in dry state of the bryophyte tissue. The lethal temperature for moist, metabolically active bryophytes are the same as in vascular plants (40-50°C). 10is jy o to O (O Ö s .s? 10o'^i'o 8° " ° O ° ° •' rft « —H, 0V o Mosses o Q>o o • Liverworts oo J ° o o Mosses • Liverworts -r-rrr 5 • o 100 1000 PPFD at 95% sat. The figure shows the result of a survey of 63 bryophytes.
