95 Diakonia Lutheran Review Summary In his article "About God — Today” pastor Zoltán Dóka seeks an answer to the pressing question in the preaching church whether it is possible, and if so how, to speak about God in a relevant manner under conditions of secularized thinking. He finds the answer in the scripture according to John in the sentence summarizing the message of the Christ revelation: "God is love” (I. John 4:16). In illustration he recounts several cases from pastoral conversations. Art historian Márta Péter describes the first permanent exhibition in the Lutheran National Museum opened last year in Budapest. The museum has been installed in the 200 year old walls of the former oratory of the Church of Pest. The first exhibition represents the history of Lutherans in Hungary from the pre-reformation period to the end of World War II, approached from the angles of church history, cultural history and art history. The essay analyses the modern way of treating the hand written and printed documents along with the other relics preserved in over 60 congregations, in the Lutheran National Archives and the Lutheran National Library. In the series "Contemporary Theologians” under the title "Pointer to the Future” professor of Theology Gyula Groó commemorates Lutheran pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer, martyr of antifascist resistance in Germany, on the 35th anniversary of his death. Bonhoeffer is one of the most original theologians of our time whose farsighted thoughts are alive and effective even today by enriching theological thinking. Our current issue contains elsewhere also quotations from Bon- hoeffer’s letters and notes written in captivity. (Bonhoeffer, D.: Widerstand und Ergebung. München 1955. Kaiser Verlag. Pages 22—23, 80, 178—182, 259—260.) Sociologist Rudolf Andorka analyses the way of life in Hungarian society Publication of the Lutheran Church in Hungary Responsible Editor: Dr. Zoltán Káldy Editor: Imre Veöreös Editorial and Publishing Office: H—1088 Budapest, Puskin u. 12. Work at the main job and other income supplementing work, as well as travel time take up a considerable part of the average day, and this time is strongly differentiated by social strata. Television occupies a dominant part of the free time leaving relatively little time for other cultural activities. Under the title “Christian-Marxist Dialogue” pastor Béla Harmati gives an account of the Lutheran World Federation’s 10 year study enterprise. After the world meeting at Evian in 1970 it was the Lutheran World Organisation that with the participation of member church groups from the international world organisations made an international study in the churches of 18 countries on questions relating to theoretical and practical dialogue between Christians and Marxists. Agricultural college professor Lajos Tóth commemorates the foundation of the agricultural school at Szarvas on the Hungarian plain by Lutheran pastor Samuel Tessedik 200 years ago. Tessedik started his school for the purpose of educating young village boys and girls in the theoretical subjects and practical skills required for improving the peasant way of life. His concepts and methods were well ahead of his time. We are publishing extracts of a recent writing by Karl Rahner, the renowned Roman Catholic theologian. The article sees the present state and the future of the church in the world in the light of Jesus’ parable about leaven, with biblical faith and a realistic view of history, rejecting the previous concept of the "victorious church”.
