1930 / 5. szám - Anton Eber, president of the Budapest Chamber of Commerce and Industry
28 HUNGARIA LLOYD October 1930 him thai is of importance to him, but the possibilities of overcoming ever new problems. The way that led from the modest lawyer in the nineties to the presidential seat of the Budapest Chamber of Commerce and industry was a lather long one. The following are a few da'ta from his biography: lie was born in Budapest in 1872. After finishing his studies at the public school he entered the service of the Hungarian National Central Savings Bank as a clerk and became in 1899 the chief of the legal and mortgage department of the Hungarian Agrarian and Annuity Bank, having in the mean time graduated from University where he studied law and was subsequently called to the bar. Later on he left the hank and for some time established himself in legal practice. Soon, however, in 1906, he became the Director General of the Hungarian Bank of Colonisation and Parcellation. At the same time he was elected Member of Parliament and has played an active part in the discussions and endeavours for an independent Hungarian Note Issuing Bank. In 1917 he effected the fusion of the Bank of Colonisation with the Hungarian Agrarian and Annuity Bank, one of the most valuable results of his political economic activity, and, in 1920, he established, in co-operation with one of the largest Italian financial groups, the Hungarian-Italian Bank whose Director General he is at present. Since 1920 he has been a member of the Buda pest Municipal Council and President of the Hungarian Society of Political Economy. These few data are sufficient to indicate that ho is a man of action and great ambitions, but do not disclose the chief secret of Anton Eber's success: viz: the charm his personality and the suggestive impression he makes on everyone with whom be comes into contact. In addition to all this — among Anton Eber's excellent qualities — his almost unequalled eloquence, which assures to this leading City personalily a prominent place among the most delightful lecturers and causeurs, deserves a chapter to itself. Anton Eber is of a martial spirit. Although he abandoned politics for finance, he has, for the last ten years, the more intensely participated in the direction of municipal matters. He ruthlessly criticises irrational economics and is a great fighter when questions of taxation are involved, lie is a sworn enemy of unproductive, unimaginative management, indefinite plans and indisciplin. His keen logical mind locates with absolute certainty the right way to follow amidst the most complicated financial problems. His fine individuality and way of thinking is vividly reflected in the powerful speech he delivered on the occasion of bis accession to the presidential seat of the Chamber in which at the same time he outlined his imposing programme for the Chamber's activity in the near future. The concluding chord of his speech appears to offer a very fitting maxim for the personalities on our public platforms: „The first duty of one who desires to serve public interest is to forget about himself."
