Later on the rise of strong absolute monarchies brought about the involvement of the state in the keeping of the parish registers. In the latest period the keeping of the registers has been completely taken in hand of the state. The first parish registers were introduced in Spain and France in the 15th century. In Croatia the oldest parish registers start after the Council of Trent, although there is a parish register in Omiš in 1488. The second part of the paper deals with the parish registers in the Ragusan area. The registers begin in the period of the Republic of Dubrovnik. They were in the competence of the church. The present collection in the Historical Archives of Dubrovnik keeps also the books from the period after the fall of the Republic. All books of the collection are Msted in the third part of the paper. 35
