Szabolcs Serfőző The Myth of Queen Maria Theresa’s Visit to Pannonhalma and Her Donations to the Abbey The literature on Pannonhalma over the past 150 years has repeatedly claimed that in July 1775 Queen Maria Theresa visited the Benedictine Archabbey. According to a letter by Archabbot Dániel Somogyi (1720–1801) to the Abbot of Bakonybél on 15 April 1775, the queen really envisaged a visit to Pannonhalma in the summer of the year. However, by every indication, the visit was cancelled. No documents testify that the queen had ever visited the Archabbey. The paper analyses the process how the fictive historical tradition of the queen’s visit evolved in the mid19th century and how it was integrated in the 20th century interpretation of the queen’s donations to the Archabbey in Pannonhalma.
