20 Takács László: Szent Columbanus Szent Márton sírjánál László Takács St. Columbanus at the tomb of St. Martin The life story of St. Columbanus was written by Ionas of Bobbio three years after the death of the legendary abbot. In his work, i.e., in the Vita Sancti Columbani Ionas recounts the conflicts that forced Columbanus to leave the monastery of Luxeuil, which was also founded by him, and how he set out to return to his native Ireland. On the voyage along the river Loire, they arrive in the city of Tours, where special and wonderful events take place that affect the entire further life of Columbanus. The study focuses on the question, what was the main source of Columbanus’ reverence for Saint Martin, whether he was influenced by the reverence of the bish op of Tours in contemporary Gaul, or rather we must think that he brought the most essential elements of the cult with him from Ireland. Considering other biographies of Irish saints and the customs and rites associated with the Feast of St. Martin, it seems to be clear that the Irish tradition of veneration played an important role in Columbanus’ acts of incomparable reverence.
