Haynald Lajos bíboros, kalocsa-bácsi érsek törekvései... 43 Adél Lakatos The Efforts of Lajos Cardinal Haynald, Archbishop of Kalocsa-Bács to Revive the Cult of Asztrik, the First Prelate of Kalocsa Lajos Haynald, the Archbishop of Kalocsa initiated and patronised many kinds of scholarly research including the excavations of Imre Henszelmann in Kalocsa, Bács and Bátmonostor aiming at discovering the past of the archdiocese. He provided space for the papers discussing the history of the archbishopric in the diocesan schematisms. The files preserved in the Archdiocesan Archives of Kalocsa give evidence that he also made an attempt to revive the cult of Asztrik, the first prelate of Kalocsa. He wanted to obtain the permission of the Holy See to put into practice his public veneration. The present paper details the antecedents and steps of this representational attempt. The diocesan heritage is considered, which might have urged the Archbishop to initiate the acknowledgement of the cult in Rome. In order to obtain the permission of the Holy See, Archbishop Haynald tried and collected the traceable forms and relics of the Asztrik-cult. Because his veneration mainly characterised the Benedictines that time, he contacted the superiors of the important European Benedictine monasteries by letter. His correspondence with Krizosztom Kruesz, the Archabbot of Pannonhalma – besides the traditions of Kalocsa – reveals the traditions of the Benedictine Order, which are also worth evoking. Although Archbishop Haynald did not eventually manage to obtain the permission of Rome to establish the public form of Asztrik’s veneration, nevertheless, owing to his efforts, many papers, articles and visual representations were produced in connection with the first prelate of Kalocsa.
