232 Prohászka László: Metky Ödön szobrász művészeti hagyatéka... László Prohászka The art bequest of Ödön Metky, sculptor in the collection of the Arch-Abbey’s Museum in Pannonhalma The art bequest of Ödön Metky, sculptor (1906–1985) was left to the Arch Abbey’s Museum in Pannonhalma, where it forms a part of the collection of fine arts. Only works of art are included in it: besides the collection of fortyfive small sculptures (sculptures, medallions, reliefs) and eight largesize plastercasts, there are no sketches, photographs, written papers, or personal documents. The present paper introduces each work of art in the context of Metky’s lifework – in chronological order and in thematic arrangement, respectively, as far as it is possible. Between 1926 and 1931, Ödön Metky studied at the Hungarian Royal Academy of Fine Arts. He spent the years of 1939–40 in Rome with a state scholarship, and he followed the school of Rome after returning to Hungary. Besides his largesize sculptures he created many mosaics of Mettlachtype ceramics. He was an excellent portraitist, but he also produced many small sculptures and some medallions. After 1945, he did not produce any monuments of Lenin or Soviet Red Army, either. Although his talent had never been disputed, he was not listed among the minions of the regime: no official honours were conferred upon him after 1945. Besides commissions of smaller significance for artworks of public places, his works of sacred art are particularly remarkable. No monographs or longer scholarly articles on his works were published in his life or posthumously, either. That is why it is especially important to introduce his art bequest kept in the collection of the ArchAbbey of Pannonhalma.
