Sulpicius Severus és egy idős püspök emlékei 75 László Takács Sulpicius Severus and the Memories of an Old Bishop – Saint Martin: Facts and Miracles Saint Martin was an old man when the young Sulpicius Severus met him. He wrote his biography based on the personal memories of the bishop of Tours and on the narratives of people who belonged to Martin’s court. In the Vita Sancti Martini Sulpicius Severus gives an overview of the early period of Martin’s life: his family, childhood, military service, the rejection of the use of weapons, his dismissal from the army, and the way how after his military service Martin started to fight against pagan cults. However, many decades passed between the actual events and their narra-tions to Sulpicius. Therefore, certain transformations might have occurred during the interpretation of the stories of the original events. In the paper I will focus on such a possible interpretation, which may help to elucidate the obscure elements of St. Martin’s biography one of which is, for instance, his long military service without using weapons.
