EGY ELFELEDETT BENCÉS RENDI KÁPTALANGYŰLÉS 1395-BŐL 115 Kornél Szovák An Unforgotten Chapter of the Benedictine Order in 1395 The Church’s mediaeval movements of renewal have been discussed in the historiography of the Church in Hungary for a long time. The idea of a reform lived vigorously in religious communities, too, and its implementation followed alternative methods as for the different branches of religious orders. The characteristic trend of reform in orders of mendicant friars was a more severe observance of the rule, while monastic orders typically aspired for the reinforcement of their central government. As for the Benedictine Order in Hungary, the bull called Benedictina shaped the course of development, and the order’s / province’s chapter became the most important institution of the order’s renewal; according to some data the chapter soon proved to be a regular meeting held biannually. Many instances are known about chapters held by the order in the 14th century, data of sources give an account of their steering (an elected presidium of four members) and organization (a committee consisting of diffinitors, and the visitators of the order). In favourable cases the order’s chapters left behind some documents (e.g., Visegrád, 1342), sometimes, however, researchers can only learn the sheer fact of chapters held. The present paper completes the series of 6 documented chapters known from the 14 th century with another one whose abbot-presidents issued a charter, as well. The hitherto unknown Chapter of 1395 held in Visegrád dealt with the institutional relationship of the Benedictine Monks and the Pauline Fathers concerning those who left the orders and the ones who transferred from one order to the other. The two newly published documents reflect – besides the readiness to revival – the receptiveness of the Benedictine Order in the Middle Ages.
