Sándor Weöres (1913–1989) is one of the greatest poets of the 20th century, although he is controversially assessed by cultural policy and critics. His wife, Amy Károlyi (1909–

2003) is also a poet, who created an individual oeuvre of special voice.

This poet-couple knew many Benedictine monks. First they were on friendly terms with Botond Forrai, who scheduled their first visit to Pannonhalma in the Autumn of 1962. The couple stayed as guests in the Abbey between 28th September and 1st October.

Their visit is commemorated in two letters and a postcard preserved in the posthumous papers of the Benedictine monk, Dávid Söveges.

The present paper introduces these documents while discussing Benedictine hospitality, the idea of “genius loci”, the poetry of Sándor Weöres, and those monks whom they met during their visit and with whom they kept having a connection later in their lives.
