184 A CELLDÖMÖLKI BAROKK MONOSTORÉPÜLET TÖRTÉNETE... István Kelemen–András Nemes: The history and research of the baroque monastery-building in Celldömölk The baroque Benedictine monastery in Celldömölk was built around the years of 1760 through 1764, the interior construction were completed in 1770. The building originally was designed to have an upper floor in all four sides, however, a part of the western side and the whole of the northern wing remained one-storied and served economic purposes. In 1786 the Benedictine Order was dissolved. In 1787 a detailed inventory was made about the movables in the rooms of the building. On the ground floor 7 rooms with stoves and 3 rooms with no stoves, a kitchen, a large refectory, a store-room, and privies were recorded. There was a spacious cellar below. Upstairs, there were 11 rooms with stoves and 6 rooms with no stoves, a private chapel, a small store-room, and separate privies. After the Order was restored in 1802, the building served as a monastery as far as 1950. In the meantime, in 1875, the incomplete western wing was extended with a granary having an upper floor. At the end of the 19th century significant renovations and modernizations took place. The works started in 1893, and they were partially carried on in connection with the royal visit in 1895. In 1895 and 1896, ground-floor business premises were developed on the northern street-front. In 1909 electricity was installed in the building. In 1911 the privies were removed from the building and new bathrooms were equipped. In 1927 the façade of the building was renovated. The pictures in the corridors were painted between 1929 and 1931, and again in 1936 by Imre Reich, local painter. In 1945 the furnishing of the building was destroyed. In 1947 an external renovation took place. Since 1950 it had functioned as the building of the local council for the district and the town, and since the political transformation it has functioned as the mayor’s office. In 1975 and 1976 the faced was restored. In 1983 chemical insulation was completed in addition. The interior reconstruction was completed in 1983 and 1985. During the interior reconstruction and modernization baroque and 20th century wall-paintings came to light. The restoration of the wall-paintings was completed in 1986. The exterior facades were renovated in 1987. In 2011 the building was returned to the Benedictine Order. In 2013 the Order committed the monastery to the diocesan care of Szombathely for 99 years. The monastery will be renewed with government subsidy in the near future. As a preparation to it, the walls and wall-paintings have been researched, and the data of the building’s history have been collected.
