12 CALVIN SYNOD HERALD Easter Meditation “On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, ‘Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen! - Luke 24:1 -6. In comparing Jesus’ birth with His resurrection we find similarities as well as differences. In both cases angels had offered information. However, at Jesus birth’ we find chiefly men - the Three Wise Men and the Shepherds. However, it is important to note that the first to learn about His resurrection were ladies. Please review the above Bible passage. Let three important observations help us to more clearly see the message and mystery of the empty Easter tomb. After Jesus’ resurrection we should not expect God to come to us - as it was the case at Christ’s birth. After Easter it is our obligation to do our part to meet the Risen Lord! At Easter, we are now informed people - and now we should go to Him, meet Him and follow Him. It was not wise and trained men - like the Magi and the Disciples - who were the first ones to learn that Christ was raised from the dead, ft was women. This elevates the ladies to the same level of respect and importance where the gentlemen are. What would the church do without the ladies? To proclaim the good news is everybody’s service! Wisdom and logic alone are insufficient to become saved children of God and loyal followers of Christ. We need faith and love as well - the qualities possessed by the caring and compassionate ladies who went to the empty tomb of Jesus. Let us remember that we can practice our faith and bear witness to Christ’s resurrection only when our heads, hearts and hands are equally involved. Rev. Easter as Nature’s Reversal A harbinger of spring chirps outside the window. “For lo, the winter is past... the flowers appear on the earth, the time of singing has come. ” Easter arrives in spring in our hemisphere. So we have confused nature ’s predictability with the unpredictable breaking forth of new life. Yet nature ’s annual rebirth may be a parable if we endure ’’the winter of our discontent ” we shall be ’’surprised by joy. ” As St. Paul pregnantly put it: ’’See, 1 show you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall be changed... ” In the above the reader will recognize borrowings from “Song of Songs,” John Steinbeck, C.S. Lewis and I Corinthians 15. Rev. David B.
