12 CALVIN SYNOD HERALD CHRISTMAS EVE On the snow covered sidewalk on that Christmas Eve on the long ago many people were hurrying home with large shopping bags in their hands. At the comer of a very busy intersection a young boy dressed in ragged clothes wearing an oversized shoe stuffed with newspaper, shivering in the cold was trying to sell little boxes of matches. Very few people paid any attention to him and those who noticed his presence walked by turning their head in different direction. Some bought one single box and hurriedly walked away. The boys feet were getting cold and his whole body felt the emel chill of the winter wind. He did not have a home or a place to go to warm up and to celebrate. It was very cold and the shivering boy was getting very tired and sleepy. Oh what he would give if he could stay in a room to warm up a little bit. He dragged himself into the side street and lasted on a large stone. He took out some matches from the little box and lit them one after another. He could feel the warmth of the flame and it seemed to him that the dark and cold disappeared. His half frozen fingers became warmer. He lit the matches from the second box and from the third until there was no match left. The white blanket of the falling snow slowly covered the little boy. He closed his eyes and saw a beautifully decorated room with Christmas tree and many toys under it waiting for him. Next morning the early risers found the frozen body of the little boy. It was Christmas day. Zoltán Király CHRISTMAS PRAYER Lord! Going out from silence, teach me to be more alert, humble, expectant, than I have been in the past: ever ready to encounter you in quiet, homely ways in every appeal to my compassion, every act of unselfish love which shows up and humbles my imperfect love, may I recognize you still walking through the world. Give me that grace of simplicity, which alone can receive your mystery. Come and abide with me! Meet me, walk with me! Enlighten my mind! And then come in! Enter my humble life with its poverty and limitations as you entered the stable of Bethlehem, the workshop of Nazareth, the cottage of Emmaus. Bless and consecrate the material of that small and ordinary life. (Prayer written by Evelyn Underhill 1875-1941) Dear Lord, help us to spread your fragrance everywhere we go. Flood our souls with your spirit and life. Possess our whole being so utterly that our lives may only be a radiance of your. Shine through us and be so in us, that every soul that we come into contact with, may feel your presence in our soul. Let the look up and see no longer us but only Jesus! Stay with us and we shall begin to shine as you shine, so to share us to be a light to others, the light Jesus, will be all from you, none of it will be ours, it will be you, shining on others through us. Let us preach you without preaching, not by words but by our example, by the catching force, the sympathetic influence of what we do the evident fullness of the love our hearts bear to you. (Prayer By John Henry Newman 1801-1890) Red Toxic Sludge Flood in Hungary A great tragedy happened on Monday, October 4th, 2010 in Ajka, Hungary. Hundreds of people had to be evacuated after a sludge reservoir burst at an alumina plant in Ajka, Veszprém County, a town 100 miles southwest of Budapest, the capital city. Seven people died, including two children, and 123 people were injured. The unstoppable toxic waste flooded to nearby towns and destroyed homes and fields. Authorities did everything they could to keep the contaminated slurry from reaching the Danube river and affecting other nations. Unfortunately the spill reached the Danube on October 7, 2010. Another big problem is that the ruptured and weakened wall of the reservoir which released the sludge is in danger of collapsing entirely. The Conference Council of the Calvin Synod asks for your help. Please, pray for the victims and make generous contributions to help them at the time of this horrible tragedy. Donations may be sent to the Calvin Synod Treasurer, Lisa Susan Toth-Maskarinec 1836 Timothy Drive • West Mifflin, PA 15122 We are thankful for your prayers and generous support! Yours in Christ, Rt.
