CALVIN SYNOD HERALD 5 The American Hungarian Reformed Presbyters’ Association 64th Annual Meeting August 28th and August 29th 2010 Opening Worship Service was held at Moriah Chapel; Rev. Albert W. Kovács led the Worship Service. His sermon was “Walking on Water.” The Text was 1 Peter 2:9-10 and Matthew 14:22-36. Our guest speaker, Rev. Imre A. Bertalan led an interesting presentation on “Elders/Church Workers.” He also handed out booklets “On Being a Hungarian Reformed Christian” By Rev. Imre Bertalan, Dr. John Butosi, Rev. Andrew Hamza, Dr. Andrew Harsanyi and Dr. Aladar Komjáthy 1982, and “Why Are You An Elder?” by Rt. Rev. Dr. John Butosi 1978. After lunch the meeting was opened for “The Discussion of the Past, Present and Future of the The American Hungarian Reformed Presbyters Association.” A handout was given to each Church delegate on the condensed minutes from 1946 to 1994. During the afternoon session the Officers, Vice-Presidents and Church leaders gave their reports. The Sunday morning session was opened with meditation by President Wilburn A. Roby Jr. Committee reports were given and New Officers were elected. The New Officers were installed by Rev. Imre A. Bertalan. An open discussion followed on the Revitalization of the American Hungarian Reformed Presbyters’ Association. The meeting was closed with a Divine Worship Service with The Lord’s Supper, led by Rev. Imre A. Bertalan, Rev. Gabot Nitsch and Rev. Albert W. Kovács. I take this opportunity to thank the Pastors and Presbyters’ of our Hungarian Reformed Churches for their participation in this years meeting and my term as President of the Presbyters’ Association. I also thank Rev. Imre A. Bertalan, Executive Director of Bethlen Communities and His staff for all of their help. I look forward to next year as Vice-President of the Central District. May we continue to open the lines of Communication betwen Clergy and the Presbyters. Roby Jr., Past President American Hungarian Reformed Presbyters’ Association Recommendations passed at the 2010 Annual Conference on August 29, 2010 1. It is recommended that the American Hungarian Presbyters’ Association continue as an active organization. 2. It is recommended that a copy of these recommendations be sent to all churches to be read to the congregations. Further we request that these recommendations be published in the Calvin Synod Herald and the Magyar Egyház along with the Presbyters’ meeting report. 3. It is recommended that Officers ofthe Presbyters’Association and the Officers of the Ministerial Association meet before next year’s conference to coordinate topics of discussion. 4. It is recommended that the Vice Presidents of each district collect an updated list of all church elders’ addresses and e-mails from each congregation and forward them to the Secretary of the Presbyters’ to collate and distribute. The President should receive the list so that information about the conference can be sent to each member as well as the ministers of the churches. 5. It is recommended that the District Vice Presidents have a meeting in their districts during the year in order to include the concerns of more lay people. 6. It is recommended that the Presbyters’ Association make a donation of $ 100 to the Youth Camp. 7. It is recommended that we give an honorarium of $100 to our guest speaker. 8. It is recommended that every church do whatever they can to support the Bethlen Communities. 9. It is recommended that all churches actively promote Youth Fellowship. Suggestions for Revitalization These suggestions were made by the attendees at the 64th Annual Conference of the American Hungarian Presbyters’ Association as a way to stimulate discussion and bring more people to our meetings. 1. Change existing structure of format of the meeting. (Instead of a worship service on the first day of the meeting, a Bible study to get us energized.) 2. Have District meetings. 3. Ministers and Chief Elders are encouraged to promote the meeting. 4. Discussion between the Presbyters and the ministers on common topics of concern. 5. We should continue the Presbyters’ Conference. 6. The elders should get together and find out what kind of problems they have. 7. Have open discussion and brain storm to make decisions that can be carried out by both elders and ministers. 8. Have the meeting at the end of Church Camp so young and old can interact. Have set date for meeting. For next year the Executive Board of the Association will meet at the Youth Camp on Saturday, before everyone leaves, to talk to the youth and set
