CALVIN SYNOD HERALD 11 substance and pattern of his speech. I fairly wonder how many of us who lived closest to him can even open the Word these days without hearing his voice behind the lines. I do know, though, the passage that best described him: Psalm 84 1. How lovely is your dwelling place, 0 LORD Almighty! 2. My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the LORD my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God... 10. Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere; I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked. From a time long before I knew him, my father marched to the beat of a different drummer. Nothing he did ever made much sense. He had a tendency to waste his time on the lost causes of the Living God and make horrible mistakes for the Lord. The things of eternity just don't seem all that reasonable to those of us trapped here in time. His crazy schemes, bright ideas, and pipe dreams rarely amounted to much by earthly standards, but that didn't matter to him in the least. He was always racing ahead, trying to get that secondfoot through the gates of heaven. That position, one foot in eternity and the other in time, was perfect for him. He loved to preach and teach because it was during those moments that he felt the Holy Spirit reach through him to draw the People of God closer in. Nothing pleased him more than finding a weary sinner, covered in self-inflicted wounds from banging against the walls of life, and showing him the open doors of Life. He was as gentle as he was kind and that job allowed him to extend the greatest joys he knew to absolutely every passerby, be he schoolboy, college professor, widow, or drunk. All his life my father was homeless. As much as he did love Earth s only paradise, Virginia, he never quite belonged here. He was just standing there at His Father s front door trying to let in as many friends as he could. Now he s finally home. Dr. Elizabeth Elliott Rev. Dr. Edwin Elliott was buried beside his parents in the churchyard of Bethany Presbyterian Church in Charles City County, Virginia, on the afternoon of October 14, 2009. CT SCANNER for BEREGSZÁSZ Rev. Dr. Edwin Elliott Memorial Fund Dear Friends of Hungarian Missions, I am writing you to let you know our fund for the CT Scanner for Beregszász has been renamed the Rev. Dr. Edwin Elliott Memorial Fund in honor of my former mentor, Rev. Dr. Edwin Elliott. A Reformed Christian leader, professor, writer, great theologian and pastor of the Reformed Presbyterian Church in Manassas, VA, Rev. Elliott passed away suddenly in October at the age of 62. Not long before his passing, Rev. Elliott sent me a quote to me via email, which I now have on my cell phone and in my wallet: “A church without missions is not only dead, it is waiting for the grave diggers.” At this time, I ask you to please consider a donation for the CT Scanner for Beregszász. The hospital clinic there completely lacks modem medical equipment - the conditions are very primitive, about 50 years behind the USA. I took an Ultrasound machine and a 12 lead ECG with me and while there I performed the first cardiac Ultrasounds (also known as Echo’s) on several dozen people. We helped diagnose and treat hypertensive cardiomyopathy, congestive heart failure, identified many cases of aortic stenosis, aortic insufficiency, a case of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, several cases of rheumatic valvular disease and a few cases of asymptomatic pericardial effusions. Via Ultrasound we identified liver disease, a pancreatic mass, several abdominal aortic aneurysms, renal cysts and renal masses. We could be even more effective if we had a CT Scanner! Please consider a donation toward this piece of modem medical equipment so that we may continue to save lives! Thank you for your prayers, help and encouragement. Peace and Blessings - Aldas, Békesség István F Komjáthy MD Help our Magyar Brethren of Beregszász and send your donation to: First Hungarian Reformed Church 221 Johnston Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15207.
