12 CALVIN SYNOD HERALD cin C^cmoriam The Rev. Paul Kovács was called Home by God on Saturday, April 4th, at 79 years of age. Rev. Kovács faithfully served the Bethlen Home from 1976 to 1999, as Executive Director, Nursing Home Administrator and Chaplain. It was during Rev. Kovács’ tenure that the full complement of retirement cottages were constructed and developed. Rev. Kovács was a gracious host for many meetings and he extended warm hospitality to all who visited our campus here in Ligonier, Pennsylvania. Previous to his ministry at Bethlen Home, Rev. Kovács served the Hungarian Reformed Church community in Uruguay and also Hungarian Reformed congregations in Johnstown, Windber and Sharon. After his retirement from Bethlen Home, Rev. Kovács returned to serve the Johnstown-Windber Hungarian Reformed Church, where he remained as pastor until his death. Rev. Kovács is survived by his wife of 52 years, Edith, loving children, Paul, Eva, Ruth and Daniel, 5 grandchildren, 2 sisters, one brother and several nieces and nephews. Paul was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Edith Miller. A full obituary can be read online by contacting the website of the Johnstown Tribune Democrat. Funeral services will be private. May we keep the Kovács family in our prayers during these days. May we thank God for the many blessings he shared with us through Paul’s life. May our faith in the certain resurrection to eternal life be strengthened during this Easter Season. May Nt. Paul Kovács’ memory remain blessed - szeretett emléke legyen áldott! Rev. Imre Bertalan Exec. Director, Bethlen Communities Special News from Manville Reformed Church The Calvin Synod’s Manville Reformed Church in Manville NJ actively lives their faith. The Congregation is currently helping raise funds to offset the medical expenses of the 2-year old son of church members so he can get the surgery he needs. Little Jake Whitehead is the youngest of Lynn and Paul Whitenight’s four sons. Jake was bom with Bilateral Microtia (a malformation of the external ear and no ear canal opening). He also had three holes in his heart, one enlarged kidney, one polycystic kidney, an iris coloboma of the left eye (a cleft in the iris), atresia (no ear canal), stenosis (partially formed ear canal), severe/profound bilateral hearing loss, and also trigonocephaly (skull deformity). Some of Jake’s medical problems have healed on his own, but he requires 4 surgeries through 2010 to help him continue to heal. The surgeries will cost about $200K, and are not covered by insurance. The entire community of Manville has gotten behind little Jake, and the church is asking anyone who is touched by the family’s plight to please make a donation to Jake’s medical fund. Checks can be made out to “Manville Reformed Church” and mailed to 235 S. Sixth Ave„ Manville, NJ 08835. Please note “Jake Whitenight Fund” in the memo. Also to help little Jake, the local American Legion is raffling a new car. Only 1,000 tickets are being sold, each ticket is $50. CONGREGATIONAL NEWS Manville, NJ - Rt. Rev. Vásárhelyi together with Chief Elder Joyce Burján paid a pastoral visit to Lynn and Paul Whitenight on April 1st, 2009 to visit 2 year old Jake. Manville, April 1, 2009 —Rt. Rev. József Vásárhelyi with Lynn, Paul & Jake Whitenight in their home The visit was uplifting and blessed, we prayed together and asked God’s help for the future operations that Jake will have to go through in California. Jake will be traveling to California with his Mom Lynn this year to attend the annual Let them Hear Foundation Microtia Conference. While in California Jake will meet with Dr. Reinisch and hopefully his assistant Dr. Lewin, one of which will be performing his reconstructive surgeries. At that time we also hope to meet with Dr. Roberson who will be performing Jake’s Atresia surgery. This is the operation that will open his ear canal to a normal size and construct an eardrum. We have high hopes that Jake will then be able to hear without a hearing aid out of one ear. To help the Whitenight family, the Passaic Hungarian Reformed Church donated from the Mission Fund $300 “For Jake Whitenight.” Rt. Rev. József Vásárhelyi Auxiliary Bishop Dean of the Eastern Classis Rt. Rev. József Vásárhelyi is the official Delegate of the Calvin Synod U.C.C. to the Constitutional Meeting of The Hungarian Reformed Churches held in Debrecen, May 22nd, 2009.
