The Word of God, which is contained in the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments, is the only rule to direct Christians how to answer the questions of eternity and enjoy God’s comfort. “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17) B. Serious and prayerful study of the Bible reveals three things: How extensive and serious the influence of sin is in human life; how a person is delivered from sin and misery; and finally how thankful a believer should be for God’s deliverance. “For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:” (Ephesians 5:8) “If thou, LORD, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand? But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared.” (Psalm 130:3-4) II. The Bible Explains the Human Condition A. God expects total devotion; sin is any want of conformity unto, or transgression of, the law of God. “And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.” (Deuteronomy 6:5) B. No one meets the standard. “As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:” (Romans 3:10) “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;” (Romans 3:23) C. The problem is the sinner, not God’s Law. “What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet. But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead. For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died.” (Romans 7:7-9) D. The resource designed to improve life became the instrument of death. “And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death. For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me.” (Romans 7:10-11) E. The knowledge of sin shatters delusions of self-control and personal adequacy to do what is in one’s best interest; a believer must have a savior because self-salvation is impossible. “O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?” (Romans 7:24) III. God Has Provided a Solution A. The solution is the heaven-sent Redeemer; the only Redeemer of God’s elect is the Lord Jesus Christ. “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;” (1 Timothy 2:5) B. Jesus Christ being the eternal Son of God became man. “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14) C. Just as Jesus was fully God, He was fully man and fulfilled the ancient promises of a Messiah. “Whose are the fathers, and of
