We ask that everyone mark your calendars for this special event in the life of our congregation. RPC Manassas. VA • Our church’s expansion project is biding its time. The city has agreed that we will not be required to meet any parking requirements in order to build out the classroom wing, on the basis of the site plan submitted and an official calculation of occupancy. Rick Hepburn has asked the Architecture Review Board for an extension of our permit, and will be researching with the attorney the church has been using what the next steps should be, and their cost. The committee believes that the proffers that the city requires may change over the next year, given the current commercial building climate, and that it is wise to wait and see. RPC Building Committee chairman: Capt. Rick Hepburn, rdhepbum@prodigy.net. • Manassas Life Chain - This annual event occurs on the first Sunday of October. At one time it was thought to involve up to 3,000 participants, standing by the roadside, holding signs and praying for an end to abortion in our town and nation. Lately the number has been closer to 300, as little has been done to promote the occasion among the churches and the sheep have scattered. If you would like to help revitalize this important community testimony by joining with the efforts of others on the Life Chain committee, or wish to nominate someone else, please contact Pete Kelly, pskelly2@comcast.net, or 540-788-1312. This is a community-wide committee, not confined to our congregation. • Walk for Life report — The annual fundraiser for the CareNet Pregnancy Resource Centers in Manassas, Woodbridge and Warrenton, which was conducted in April, raised about $64,000 this year, the most ever. This outcome helps support the important gospel outreach to pregnant women and those around them. • On the Sabbath Day - The following comment was made by the Committee Report of Standing, on the Sabbath Day, found in the Reformed Presbyterian Church North America Synod Report of 1910: “The Sabbath is the mountain day between the weeks. Here Jesus is found teaching and pronouncing blessings. They, who will, may have this high day with Jesus, and enjoy His fellowship - the very essence of happiness. How rich and numerous the blessings that come to such! This mountain is strewn with precious gifts: comfort for the sad; pardon for the guilty; bread for the hungry; rest for the weary; riches for the poor; visions for the pure; society for the lonely; crowns for the humble; heaven for the persecuted; the Holy Spirit for all. What happy experiences the Sabbath brings to those who worship in the Spirit! What views of life, of destiny, of eternity! What stirrings of the soul, what incoming power, what feelings of holy awe, what consciousness of kinship with God! How the horizon bounds back, and life grows large! How near heaven seems to be! How real the Throne, the Lamb, the angels, and the Redeemed! Blessing upon blessing for the Sabbath-keeper. Blessed is the man that doeth this, and the son of man that layeth hold on it; that keep the Sabbath! — Isaiah 56:2. ” FPC - Lawrenceburg. Tennessee • In June, First Presbyterian Church in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, pastored by Rev. Chuck Huckaby, was privileged to host Rev. and Mrs. Jack Day, retired missionaries to Brazil for a Bible Story Telling Workshop. Thirteen adults and youth learned how to tell Bible Stories effectively and how Bible Stories are used in evangelism, church planting, teaching and preaching. The training was fun and challenging at the same time. The workshop began on Thursday June 21st and ended Saturday June 23rd. The following Lord’s Day, 3 young people and several adults were able to tell Bible Stories to the congregation and demonstrated amazing improvement in a very short time. The young people will be telling Bible Stories to preschool children who attend the First Presbyterian Preschool. The adults are also putting the training to good use with Pastor Chuck using Bible stories in preaching and as a chaplain. Renee is using her training as a Bible teacher. Other members are looking for ways to tell Bible Stories in the community. More information on Bible Story Telling is available at http://biblestorytelling.blogspot.com/. • On July 15th, Michael Vogel, aged 14, was baptized on profession of faith. Continued on page 4
