First God elects, then God calls, and these He calls He justifies.fi] God does not infuse righteousness into them but pardons their sins and accounts them righteous not because of what they have done but for Christ’s sake alone. God does not impute faith itself to them as their righteousness but imputes the righteousness of Christ in Christ’s obedience and satisfaction of the law. [2] The elect receive and rest on Christ and His righteousness by faith. Faith is not of the person but the gift of God.[3] II. Faith in the receiving and resting on Christ and His righteousness is the only instrument of justification.^] Nonetheless, faith is never alone in the person justified but always is accompanied by all other saving graces. This faith is no dead faith but works by love.[5] III. Christ, by His obedience and death fully paid the debt of all that are justified by faith. Christ made a proper, real, and full satisfaction to God’s justice for them.[6] The Father for the justified[7] gave Christ in their stead, [8] not for anything in them their justification being only from free grace. [9]This insures both the justice of God and His grace are glorified in the justification of sinners. [10] IV. God from eternity decreed the justification of the elect. [11] Christ in the fullness of time died for their sins. Christ arose again for their justification [12]: nevertheless, they are not justified until the Holy Spirit does in due time actually applies Christ to them. [13] V. God continues to forgive the sins of those elect who are justified.[ 14] They can never fall from the state of justification[ 15] yet by sin may come under God’s displeasure and not have His light restored to them until they repent confessing their sins, begging pardon for their sins, and renew their faith. [16] VI. The justification of believers under the Old Testament was in all respects the same as justification of believers under the New Testament. [17] Questions 1. How was the justification of the Old Testament saints different than now? 2. Is God’s forgiveness of sin a continuous event for believers? 3. What happens when person who is justified sins? 4. When does God restore his presence and blessing to believers who sin? 5. What is the only instrument of justification? 6. Whom does God justify? 7. When God gives the gift of faith what always comes along side of it? 8. How are believers justified? 9. When are the elect justified?
