6 CALVIN SYNOD HERALD We closed a most informative afternoon reminding each other what Pete had taught us: We should teach based on what Jesus taught us: • Jesus started where his students were • Jesus shared life saving truth • Jesus explained how His truth applied • Jesus demanded action Remember to follow the natural learning cycle: Get motivated, Know the facts, Practice, Apply. Reach every student’s learning style: Imaginative learner, Analytical learner, Common Sense learner, Dynamic learner. Remembering the teacher’s role changes with each lesson plan. Thank You, God, for this day and thank you, Pete Zickefoose! Julius Pongracz, Coordinator Hungarian Reformed Church Lorain, Ohio Conference attendees listen intently to speaker Peter Zickefoose at the Christian Education Conference held at the Hungarian Reformed Church of Lorain Ohio UCC Ministers and church leaders from six Hungarian churches attended the Christian Education Conference First Timothy - Ministers’ Manual Part 1 “But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house “These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly: But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.” (1 Timothy 3:14-15) I. Study Faithful Mentors A. Avoid false teachers who misdirect the faithful. “As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine, Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do. Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned(1 Timothy 1:3-5) B. Avoid teachers who stray from the standard. “From which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling; Desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm.” (1 Timothy 1:6-7) C. Paul illustrated the changed life in his own testimony, giving the credit to Christ. “And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry; Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.” (1 Timothy 1:12-13) D. God calls ministers so that they may display grace. “Howbeit for this cause / obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.” (1 Timothy 1:16) II. Show People What Is Important A. Teach people to pray for all categories of people; theology is intensely practical in a theological world. “I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty." (1 Timothy 2:1-2) B. Explain Who Jesus is and what He has accomplished for believers. “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.” (1 Timothy 2:5-6) C. Apply doctrine in personal behavior; this is a root passage for the Puritan Principle. [ITimothy 2:8-15] III. Take Spiritual Oversight A. Leadership and responsibility are important in the church but only on God’s terms. “This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work." (1 Timothy 3:1)
