12 CALVIN SYNOD HERALD Hungarian Reformed Youth Camp 2005 The 2005 Youth Camp is history! This was arguably the most successful camp in recent years. The energy level was high, the young people enjoyed themselves tremendously, the feeling of Christian fellowship was the all-encompassing feeling for the week. We had ninety participants in our annual camping experience. There were twenty-three “new” campers and ten older teens and adults who enrolled in the “Counselor in Training” class (mandatory for all counselors). Our theme this year was “Treasures In Heaven,” and each invited speaker approached this theme from a different aspect of what true Christian treasure means. Each morning began with a presentation by a speaker, followed by discussion. Our presenters this year were Calvin Synod ministers Rt. Rev. Louis Medgyesi (OH), Rev. Csaba Krasznai (OH), Rev. István Kacso (CA), and Rev. Zsolt Otvos (OH). Also speaking to our group was Sandy Crumrind, a terrific youth leader active in a successful ministry in the Ligonier PA area. Every afternoon there were four separate Bible study opportunities related to this topic. Our group leaders were Frank Király (Trenton, NJ), István Medgyesi (Fairport Harbor, OH), Sandy Szepesi (White Oak, PA) and Kathy Smith (Fairport Harbor, OH). Every afternoon also included a “fun time” with Christian themes, a time for teamwork, bonding and learning about Christ and the Bible. Also, every afternoon there were organized activities and games. Evening programs included a dance, talent show, and initiation of new campers. . Other organized activities, both afternoon and evening, included learning Hungarian “Whip Making” with Gabriel Csapó (Trenton, NJ), “Dance Class” with Aurel Ludwig (Hammond, IN), “Tie-Dye” class with Maria Torok (Columbus, OH) and Karen Király (Woodhaven, Ml), Hungarian Cooking with Les Torok (Columbus, OH) and Gabriel Csapó, “Art & Spirituality” with Mike Király (Woodhaven, Ml), Bible-based discussion with Kathy Smith, ‘Quiet Space - Journaling” with Susie Ujvagi (Toledo, OH), and “Outdoor Survival” with Timothy Parsons (Trenton, NJ). This year we had campers and counselors from ten states: Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Florida, Texas, and California. And they keep bringing new friends! In many ways the “spirit” of our Youth Camp is Kathy Smith, who organizes many of the group activities, and leads the young people both in singing and bringing out a tremendous love for the Lord Jesus Christ. The 2005 Annual Meeting of the Calvin Synod honored her with a citation for the past twenty years of volunteer effort, and this was presented to her on the first day of camp: a well deserved honor! As is traditional, on Friday evening all the campers gathered around a campfire dressed in their “Sunday best”. They sang songs of praise they had learned during the week, reflected on the time they had together, and in a silent candle-light procession walked up to the meeting house where we had worshiped every morning. Rt. Rev. Louis Medgyesi, Rev. István Kacso, Rev. Zsolt Otvos and Bishop Koloman K. Ludwig conducted a traditional Hungarian Reformed Worship Service with Holy Communion. During the Service twenty-three persons rededicated their lives to Christ. The picture-taking and fond “farewells” that evening and the next morning were indicative of the tremendous experience all the participants shared. Rt. Rev. Koloman K. Ludwig, Bishop
