12 CALVIN SYNOD HERALD future activities they will be used for. Based on all these, our committee recommended that the leadership of the Bethlen Home start organizing a bidding process for the demolition job of the parts that need to be demolished. At the same time we also recommended that the leadership of the Bethlen Home take the necessary steps to file the needed applications for a limited scope use of the central core part of the building immediately after the residents are moved into the new home. This is needed because already there is indication that these parts of the building might be used for meetings and small events even before the reconstruction work would be done. The third important recommendation of the committee was that the Bethlen Home authorize a comprehensive study in the neighboring area regarding the feasibility of introducing a new kind of elderly care that has just recently become available in the state of Pennsylvania. The essence of this program is that elderly people who would qualify for nursing home care financed by the government, but prefer to stay in their home instead, may chose to do so. While they do not move into the nursing home, the personnel of the nursing home would provide care for them in their own home, would supervise their medication, provide their health care, and organize community events for them, etc. It is true that such a study costs more, but depending on the results of this study, it could be decided whether the central core and the North wing can be used completely, or at least partially, for this new program. If the study would show that it would make economical sense to introduce this new program in Ligonier, this would mean the expansion of our mission, we could serve more people than just those who will live in the new nursing home, and the remaining part of the old building will continue to be used for a purpose similar to its original one. The first phase of the strategic plan focuses on the re-utilization of the old nursing home building. The next phases will deal with the extension of the retirement homes, and the utilization of the remainder of the available land. We thank God for His blessings that helped the work at the Bethlen Home in the past, and ask His blessings for the future. Respectfully submitted by Rev.
