6 CALVIN SYNOD HERALD (Continuedfrom page 5) While we were in Canada — on the advice of my friend, an older pastor -1 submitted my application to the Calvin Synod to receive permission to be a member as a minister. My application was successful. In the meantime, the pulpit at the First Hungarian Reformed Church of Walton Hills became vacant. God’s leading and the mutual good relationship with the presbyters resulted in me undertaking the ministerial responsibility at the church. In March of 2003 the congregation elected me, and on May 11,1 began the pastoral ministry. Congratulations on Retirement Best wishes to Janet Lawton who retired from full-time employment at Bricker & Eckler law firm on June 11, after 18 years of faithful service. She began working at a dime store when she was 16 years old and is now looking forward to spending more time with her husband, Jim, her grandchildren, friends and family, and may even consider part-time work at some point. Janet will also be keeping busy as Chief Elder at the Hungarian Reformed Church in Columbus, Ohio, and as the newly elected Treasurer of the Calvin Synod for the next three years. “It’s been good and I’ve enjoyed my time at Bricker & Eckler, but its time to leave,” said Janet. “I hope to hear from everyone once in awhile, if I’m not laying on the beach eating bonbons... Ha!! I haven’t even eaten one since I worked in the dime store at 16!” Congratulations, Janet, and God bless you! S. Mansell UCC Renewal Leader Responds to Wethersfield, Connecticut, Church Vote CANDIA, NH - Executive Director David Runnion-Bareford, of the Biblical Witness Fellowship Renewal Movement in the United Church of Christ, responded today to the vote of First Church of Christ in Wethersfield, CT, to leave the United Church of Christ. “It is a tragedy that the largest congregational church in New England, a regional lighthouse for spiritual renewal and ministry, should find itself forced to leave the United Church of Christ,” Rev. Runnion- Bareford said. “This is another strong warning that the United Church of Christ is a denomination in disorder, disintegration and confusion. It is a loud call for the UCC to return in repentance to the authenticity of its founding faith and Biblical call to life in Jesus Christ as Lord.” First Church of Christ of Wethersfield is the largest congregational church in New England and had been the fifth largest congregation in the United Church of Christ. The United Church of Christ as a denomination that includes most of the founding churches of New England. It is currently the loss leader in members and congregations among Protestant denominations in the United States. Ths UCC is facing severe financial shortfalls as a result. It is the only denomination in the United States to wholeheartedly embrace the practice of sexual license among clergy and laity. Box 102, Candia, NH 03034 New Sign Honors Church’s Reformed Heritage About a year ago, Dr. Edwin P. Elliott, pastor of the Reformed Presbyterian Church in Manassas, asked me to re-work our outside signage. He envisioned something that emphasized the Reformed part of our faith. I, therefore, decided that the “Reformed” header should be the most prominent typography on the sign - the focal point, if you will. For the rest, I used the Ten Commandment Tablets that hang in our sanctuary as the basis for the design. Those stately black tablets with gold type and trim are very attractive and create a sense of authority. They really pop due to the gold contrasting with the black. I inverted the shape of the tablets for the sign, primarily because I had the idea that the sign should hang from a cross style sign post, kind of like an old pub sign. I created the schematic and layout for the sign in adobe illustrator. I used a PC font called Poor Richard for the type because it has a classy historic feel to it. I recreated the Alpha and Omega symbol using the pen tool and placed it at the bottom of the sign. I then saved the file as a .pdf and handed it off the Francis Elliott (Pastor Elliott’s brother) to take it to the sign maker. I am currently working on a revision of the “Christ is King” sign, and we are hoping to add one to the back of the church as well.
