4 CALVIN SYNOD HERALD Annual Youth Conference in Columbus Forty-six members of nine churches gathered for the Annual Youth Conference of the Calvin Synod on May 1 st and 2nd at the Hungarian Reformed Church in Columbus, Ohio. Surprisingly, the largest group arrived from Trenton, New Jersey, (18 participants!) which really served to remind us that even in spite of the big distances that separate us, the Spirit of God can gather together and unite us. Youth from nine different churches attended the Annual Youth Conference of the Calvin Synod at the Hungarian Reformed Church in Columbus, Ohio After registration and lunch, the conference started with a lecture. We chose the theme of this year’s conference to be “Living in a Chaotic World.” How can God be our guide and protector in this confused world, which provides so many good and bad opportunities and choices for us in 2004? Our guest speaker was the Rt. Rev. Koloman Ludwig from Whiting, Indiana. The lecture was followed by discussion groups and a summary where the youth members could share their thoughts on our theme. Later in the afternoon, a Christian band, the Vison Co., gave a one-hour concert that was not only a fun experience but also a wonderful testimony for all of us. After some free time, the dance started in the social hall. It was interesting to see that even though some youth members were dancing, most of them were talking and sharing the experiences they had since their last meeting. It was obvious that the friendships formed in the youth camps bind our younger members strongly together. The next day, we participated in a combined English-Hungarian church service with the participation of the youth members of the Columbus church. The sermon’s title was “Chaos Management 101.” After lunch and a short business meeting we said goodbye to each other, already planning to meet again at the Hungarian youth camp in July. Seeing so many young people together in Christian fellowship was a wonderful experience for our church, especially for our own youth group. The participants of the conference, as well as we, the organizers, give thanks to God for these two wonderful, spiritually nurturing days, and thank everyone for their support. Rev. Zsolt Ötvös Hungarian Reformed Church, Columbus, Ohio Women’s Spring Conference The 52nd Annual Women’s Conference of the Hungarian Reformed Churches of Western Pennsylvania was held on Sunday, May 2, 2004, at the Free Hungarian Reformed Church of McKeesport, Pennsylvania. Sixty-six attend this year’s conference. As the ladies arrived and registered they received a pink carnation, compliments of the William Penn Association. We appreciate their support of this conference. The Worship Service was conducted by members of the Women’s Guild and the Meditation was given by the host pastor, Rev. Dr. Daniel Borsay. The highlight of the service was the performance of the youth choir, under the direction of Alice Macleod. The choir ranged in age from five to twenty-two. Since we were still in the season of Easter, they sang Hosanna and Alleluia. We were truly blessed to have the opportunity to hear this talented choir. A short business meeting followed, led by the Women’s Guild President, Mrs. Carolyn Haias. Mrs. Arlene Csornán, President of the Ladies Aid of the Third Avenue Calvin Reformed Church in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, accepted the conference for 2005. A delicious meal followed the business meeting. We thank Rev. Dr. Daniel Borsay and the Women’s Guild for hosting the 2004 Conference. May God’s Blessings continue with the conference. Virginia D.
