Following the Reformed customs, they named themselves after an exemplary, direction-giving, significant biblical character. In this case: Lydia. The members are such women, and they are expecting similar female disciples to join - those whose hearts were opened by the Lord, who have received the word of God, and who would like to show their faith, gratitude and love for their Savior through their unselfish labor for the benefit of their Congregation. • On November 22 the Lydia Ladies are going to host a '‘disznótoros ” dinner for our Congregation with live music and dance. • On December 31,2003, we will hold our annual New Years ’s Dinner and Dance with and “end of the year” devotion in our sanctuary. Whiting Congregation Member Honored as Hero The Northwest Indiana 2003 “In Honor of Heroes” dinner, held on September 11, recognized Miss Margaret Augustine, a member of the congregation of the Hungarian Reformed Church in Whiting, Indiana, for her role in saving the life of a member of the community. Also honored (posthumously) that evening were Greg Sanders, Roy Buckley and Duane Rios, three area residents who lost their lives while serving in Iraq with the military, each of whose parents and wives were presented with a “Hero” medal on a tricolor neck sash. In addition, a number of other persons, including Firemen and Policemen, were honored for acts above and beyond the call of duty which resulted in saving the lives of persons in danger and distress. Margaret Augustine received a “wrong number” telephone call one day, and rather than just assuming that the garbled speech she heard was a crank phone call, she alerted the police that she felt someone was in distress. She was able to provide the caller’s number through her “caller ID” feature. The “wrong number” turned out to be an older woman who had suffered a stroke and was unable to communicate. An EMT unit stabilized the victim and transported her to the hospital. Several weeks later, she was able to meet Margaret in person, when she went to Munster Community Hospital, where Margaret has been a volunteer for more than 20 years. Margaret was a lifelong member of the Indiana Harbor Congregation, where she had served as Chief Elder, Ladies Aid President, Church Treasurer, and Church Organist. In addition to being Organist at the Whiting Congregation, Margaret is also a longtime member of the Auxiliary for the Carmelite Home for Girls, which cares for “at risk” girls in the community. Margaret often represented the Indiana Harbor Congregation at the Annual Meetings of Calvin Synod, and has also been active in the Western Classis, where she served one term as Secretary. Rev. Karl Ludwig Rev. Attila Veres Kovács is the new pastor at the Hungarian Reformed Church in Lorain, Ohio. He is pictured here with his lovely wife, Valeria.
