Tee shirts, sometimes even with ugly obscenities, and ragged jeans seems to be good enough in church for many people. But should it be so? Seen only in museum exhibits in America, the lovely hand­work in the dresses and vests, shawls and aprons, give evi­dence of a Christian culture turned on to the adoration of God. Hardworking peasant women, who labored all week spent evening and weekend hours sewing and crafting the beautiful vasárnapi ruha - Sunday dress - they wore to church, and their men’s as well. And they are the objects of our admiration today. “Give of your best to the Master," inspired them to such patient endeavor, and in their dedication they too found bless­ing. While they may have been peasants all week, on Sunday they rose to nobility in the sight of the Lord. While kings and landlords abused them, treating them too often no better than animals, on Sunday they stood tall and no one could deny their dignity. There was a time in America when these same peasants arrived by the boatload and struggled to make a living. But the early photos show how they put on their Sunday best and adorned with lovely handcrafted covers and handpainted de­signs the simple wooden churhces of Hungarian Reformed faithful. They taught their children to do the same, and years later we see old church photos of ladies and men, children too, in dignified Sunday suits and dresses. It continued on into the nineteen sixties. But then a blew Age hippie movement arose, and a crude subculture of unruly behavior and unkempt dress. Like the military uniforms of the Communists and the Nehru jackets of
