Imre A. Bertalan Michael Walker Executive Director Administrator Ecumenical Service Unites Cleveland Hungarian Parishes The pastors and members of nine Hungarian churches in the Cleveland, Ohio, area gathered for prayer on Sunday, January 22nd, in celebration of the “Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 2002”. Meeting in mid-afternoon, the service was held in St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Church, Solon, Ohio, and marked the second annual event by the neighboring congregations. The Rev. Michael Huszti, pastor of the host church, was joined by the Rev. István Geczy, pastor of First Hungarian Reformed Church of Walton Hills; the Rev. Frank Shepherd of First Hungarian Lutheran Church, Cleveland; the Rev. Igor Botansky of Hungarian Seventh Day Adventist Church; the Rev. Imre László of Grace Hungarian Baptist Church; the Rev. Csaba Orosz from Bosworth Road Presbyterian Church; the Rev. Bela Bernhardt of the Hungarian Conference of the Evangelical Lutheran Church; the Rev. Dr. László Fazekas of Hungarian Baptist Church; and the Rev. Miklós Egressy from the Ukraine. The service began with a procession, while the cantors sang the Byzantine hymn, “So Great The Glory”. Parishioners of the host church opened the celebration with the first portion of the Akathist Service, in praise of the Lord Jesus Christ, the first two chants following the Byzantine Plain Chant melodies. The scriptural verses extolling the Father’s infinite love (“God so loved the world” - John 3:1-17), was read by Rev. Geczy, followed by his singing of a traditional “Református” him. Then Rev. Shepherd offered up several ecumenical prayers for Christian unity, for the healing of the divisions and God’s providential care for the faithful. The theme of this year’s observance, “With You is the Fountain of Life,” was emphasized in a talk by Loretta Nemeth. The main address for the devotional honor was delivered by the Rev. Miklós Egressy, in which he recalled several outstanding examples of ecumenism that he experienced among the various churches in his homeland, the Ukraine - which was once Hungary. His discourse was translated into English by Rev. Geczy, so the congregants could understand and appreciate the hearty ecumenical spirit exhibited in the everyday life of Christians in the Karpataija region of the nation. The area ministerial group held its first meeting of the year, after the arrival of several more clergy. A biblical study on the miracles in scripture was presented by Dr. Fazekas. In clarification he noted that the Bible, first and foremost, highlights the Word of God. The miracles of Jesus, he stated, were recorded as affirmation by the Father of Christ’s saving ministry. He remarked that it is the preaching of the Word that leads to belief, and only then can humans understand the significance of the miracles.
