Here’s a project for the next 1,000 years

Kid: Say, Dad, how many years are there in a millennium:

Dad: Well son, the prefix mille is Latin for a thousand. So there are 1,000 years in a millennium.

Kid: So then the first millennium ended at the end of 1,000 years, or Dec. 31,1000, and the second millennium began the next day on Jan. 1,1001, right?

Dad: Right on Sonny. You’ve got it.

Kid: Well, Dad, if I’m right, why is everyone getting ready to celebrate the new millennium this New Year’s Day? I’ve even read a letter to the editor where a guy said this Christmas is the last one of the 20th century.

Dad: I really can’t say, Sonny. It might have something to do with the new math they’re teaching in the schools, or maybe NASA goofed something up.

Kid: Hmmm. You know, Dad, when your odometer turned over 100,000 miles, you didn’t wait until it had 101,000 on it before you told everyone your car had a 100,000 miles on it.

Dad: That’s right, Sonny. That’s because my odometer started at zero, not at one like the first millennium.

Kid: Well, why didn’t they start the first millennium at year zero, Dad?

Dad: Sonny, why don’t you go out and play?
