Open the Holy Scripture, both to those who teach and to those who learn, that the difficulties of the letter may not hide the light of the Spirit, Wlake all the scholars ready to be taught and willing to obey, that they may find joy and peace in the way of Thy commandments. Cnrich the teachers with patient faithfulness and loving wisdom, so that they may be ambassadors of Ghrist who shall win many souls to righteousness. Quicken Thy Ghurch, O Lord, to the end, that many laborers may go forth into this part of Thy vineyard. We pray Thee, look not only upon us and our children, but upon Thy children in all lands as well, who still dwell in darkness and the shadow of death. Have pity upon them, and gather them by the kindly hand of Thy servants into the light of the Ghristian fold that all may sit at the feet of Jesus and learn of Hiw. §rant Thy power and success to all efforts to bring the world to Thee by preaching and teaching. "Bless such work as will make for righteousness and Ghristian character, and so let Thy truth be manifested from generation to generation, until the whole family of mankind shall rejoice together in Thy mercy, through Jesus Ghrist, the Saviour of the world. We ask it in Thy name, Lord Jesus, fimen. Evangelical Book of Worship, Eden Publ., St. Louis, MO 1916 Dear Readers: We give thanks to the Heavenly Father as new leadership takes the helm of this revered publication, with gratitude for His endless love, help and patience. He has surely guided us throughout this first century of our Calvin Synod Herald - Reformátusok Lapja. The first issue of our paper appeared on August 15, 1990 thus it is already 100 years old. We praise the Lord for His continued blessings on our paper, which is the oldest Hungarian Reformed church journal in the world, even including present day Hungary. So we are planning on a special celebration for the observance of its Centennial. We are truly indebted to the Lord for giving us faithful editors for one hundred years, with a love for the publication of the Gospel and a love for the Church of His Son. We are especially thankful to the Rt. Rev. Dr. Stephen Szabó, Honorary Bishop of Calvin Synod, who stepped in twice to save the paper’s record of continuity and service to the churches. He was the editor from 1963 to 1968, and again from 1989 to August 31, 1999, a total of 15 years. We pray that our Heavenly Father will be with him and give him many more years in this world in the company of his loved ones. However, at this 100 year summit, we do not just look back, but now forward to the future. Reflecting our presbyterial heritage, every minister, elder and member of Calvin Synod is responsible for the life and future of our paper. We expect that the Herald will be on the table of every family that belongs to our churches. Group subscriptions for under fifty are $8.00. That is only 66 cents a month, just 15 cents a week, or a mere 2.2 cents a day. By just stopping to pick up the loose pennies on the sidewalk, we would probably be able to cover the cost of the subscription. Why not take a minute to think about it, and then call your Pastor to order the paper for your home. The Herald is our direct channel of communication with the Synod, with our Hungarian Reformed kindred in Hungary, and those all over the world. Through the English section, we have worldwide communication with Reformed Church members everywhere, since we send the Herald to no less than 43 countries. Through its pages we alert our readers to such events as the recent Elders and Ministers meetings, at Ligonier on Labor Day weekend. Those at the event heard the Rt. Rev. László Horkay, the new Bishop of the Hungarian Reformed churches of Karpataija (now the Ukraine). The Second American-Hungarian National Convention will meet soon, on September 24-26, at the Crown Plaza Hotel in the Meadowlands, New Jersey, across from New York City. Over a thousand guests are expected from all over the United States and abroad. Calvin Synod will participate. Be sure that your church or organizations are represented, since many famous leaders will be attending, as New York state’s Gov. Pataki. Plan to be there! On the first Sunday in October many of the Synod’s churches will be observing World Wide Holy Communion. At the Lord’s Table we share with our loved ones in our home
