Ez a mi 61-ik Egyházkerületi Évi Közgyűlésünk. Jómagam, aki a század második évében láttam napvilágot személyesen 58 évi közgyűlésen vettem részt és mindig nehéz súllyal dolgozó munkásként. A múlt évről kórházi tartókodás miatt lemaradtam. Isten külön kegyelméből felgyógyultan ugyan, de éveim magas száma megakadályozta az ezéveni gyűlésen való jelenlétemet, főként a nagy távolság miatt. Túlzott RÉV. EMIL VARGA (1914-1999) The Rév. Emil Varga, pastor emeritus of the First Reformed Church of South River, died on April 14, 1999. He served the First Reformed Church of South River for 36 years. During his tenure, he introduced English-language worship services at the church, which was founded by Hungarian immigrants in 1903. He was the co-author of “Children of Ellis Island", a book on the experiences of children of Hungarian immigrants growing up during the Great Depression. A sister, Emma V. Grund, is deceased. Surviving are his wife of 59 years, the former Emma Jane Tarcaly; two daughters, Chaplain Emily Varga- Comella of Lakehurst and Coral Ann Pellechia of North Brunswick; a sister, Yolan, of New Brunswick and two grandchildren. Az 1963-ik évben, amikor Közegyházunk visszaütésként önnállóságunk kivívásáért megszüntette a Lapunk számára addig kiutalt teljes fenntartási összegeket és emiatt a szerkesztő lemondott. A Lap megmentése volt a történelem parancsa. Az idő öt évre nyúlott, mig végre Dr. Vitéz Ferenc vállalata a szerkesztést. Másodszor 1989-ben újra visszaadta Isten kezembe a tárogatót ismételten megmentésként, mely periódus egy évtizedre terebélyesedett. Másod-izbeni szerkesztésem kezdete pontosan az évre esett, amelynek karácsonyán a mi nagy Tőkés Lászlónk temesvári ostromának nyomában gyökeresen megváltozott körülöttünk minden. Végre megnyíltak a záró sorom-Continued on Page 8 GENERAL SYNOD 22 OF THE UCC Was Held on July 1-6,1999 in Providence, Rl The General Synod is formed by the elected representatives of the Conferences apportionately sent in by the former governing Conferences (in the former Evangelical Reformed Church, they were called Synods) The Synod name was only maintained by the General Synod, and Calvin Synod of the UCC. The Calvin Synod representatives were Rev. Zoltán S. Sutto, Mr. Julius Pongrácz, Rt. Rev. Louis Medgyesi, ex-officio as bishop and Rt. Rev. Zoltán D. Szűcs. A good friend of our Synod, Rev. John H. Thomas, was elected as new president of UCC. God’s gracious blessing on him and his endeavor. 1999 Season Youth Conference The Youth Conference of the Hungarian Reformed Church in America and the Calvin Synod Conference, United Church of Christ, will be held August 1-7,1999, at the Laurelville Mennonite Church Center in Mt. All checks for the camp fee should be made payable to HUNGARIAN REFORMED YOUTH GROUP CAMP The leader from our Synod this year will be Rev. Zoltán Sutto. This summer’s Youth Conference is the single most successful enterprise done together by the two American Reformed Church bodies year after year with the help of the two gracious fraternals: the Hungarian Reformed Federation and the William Penn Association. The joint Annual Youth Conference was designed to be the first step toward a complete union of the two church bodies. Unfortunately, the second step was never followed!
