CALVIN SYNOD HERALD- 7 -AMERIKAI MAGYAR REFORMÁTUSOK LAPJA World Wide Communion First Sunday in October As we prepare ourselves in true repentance for this communion, let us keep the following in our thoughts also. The first Christian Creed, The Apostles’ Creed which was formulated by the apostles, called the early Christians “The Communion of Saints”. We still repeat these same words when we repeat the Apostles’ Creed. In order to show the unity of all Christians in faith, the present Christian churches of this century designated the first Sunday in October to celebrate World Wide Communion. “Question 54 of the Heidelberg Catechism asks: What do you believe concerning ‘the Holy Catholic Church (the Holy Universal Christian Church)’? The answer states: I believe that, from the beginning to the end of the world, and from among the whole human race, the Son of God, by His Spirit and His Word, gathers, protects and preserves for Himself, in the unity of the true faith, a congregation chosen for eternal life. Moreover, I believe that I am and forever will remain a living member of it.” Violet M. Szabó from T.H.R.C. Communicator Bill Köteles Honored in Hungary Four years ago, the Operating Theatre Room of the hospital in Debrecen, Hungary was named in honor of Bill Köteles. Since then, several doctors have invited Bill to visit but it was in June of this year that Bill and his daughter Virginia were able to go abroad. In the hospital’s Heart Center, a special presentation was made. Bill received and Honorary Diploma from the Hungarian Society of Cardiac Surgery and a medal. After touring the new facility, Bill was able to visit with patients who used the Heart and Lung Machines made at Pemco, Bill’s factory, when they were operated on. The doctors told the patients that if it wasn’t for this equipment (Heart & Lung Machine), they wouldn’t be alive today. Over the years, Bill has sent seven Heart and Lung Machines to Hungary. He solicited financial help for four of these machines from the Hungarian people of Cleveland who made donations through various Hungarian churches and organizations. The other three machines were purchased by the hospitals. Bill also traveled to Szeged, Hungary and visited the Medical University located there. He was presented with another Diploma from the Szent-Györgyi Albert Medical College, and was thanked for all that he has done for Hungary. There is also a copy of a detailed article written in Hungarian about Bill’s recent visit and his great generosity that appeared in newspapers throughout Hungary. Köteles is a second generation Hungarian who was born right here in Cleveland, Ohio. His parents were simple Magyar immigrants who came here with the first wave of immigration from the town of Tneke in Bihar County in Hungary. Their ancestors in Tenke were noted already in the year of 1770 as the records run as “hard-working, honest and reliable citizens following the Calvinistic religion”. Harrry Emerson Fosdic said “Democracy is based upon the conviction that there are extraordinary possibilities in ordinary people". Our Béla Köteles is the exemplification at the highest level of that terminology. His spacious country home in Broadview Heights, a perfect replica of a Magyar Kúria, has been the most gracious hosting “Bonneville” to all HunPastoral Installation at S. Norwalk -In one of the oldest churches of our Synod in Connecticut, the Rev. Judit Mayer was installed by our Bishop, the Rt. Rev. Louis Medgyesi on August 30, 1998 with solemn ceremony. The installation was followed by a great Banquet at the Dokus Hall of the church, named after the organizing pastor. Ad multos annos! QQQ The Fall Meeting of Our Lakeside Classis - Our bishop called the Fall Meeting of our Lakeside Classis for October 5, Monday, with a noon lunch, beginning with our Dayton, Ohio church. This meeting will elect the new Dean in replacing Rev. István Nyeste, whose tragic accident with an unexpected turn made the office vacant. OOÜ Bishop Gustáv Bölcskei in Cleveland At the headquarters of the U.C.C., a formal noon-dinner reception was given by Dr. Paul H. Sherry, president of U.C.C. At the same place and time, the ruling bishop of the mother-church solemnly presented an honorary Theological Doctor’s Diploma from the University of Debrecen to Dr. Stephen Szabó on the 8th day of September. Ecumenical leaders attended the great and gracious celebration, together with family members of the recipient. The artistic Diploma in Latin came to the recipient from his Alma Mater, where he received his Ph.D. Doctorate. garian visiting dignitaries and community leaders for well over a half-century. He is a self-made, enterprising businessman, who, by the industrious work of his two hands and keen mind, reache the highest possible level of American achievements. His PEMCO heart-lung units made his name known worldwide. A dozen of them are operating in Hungary, all produced by his PEMCO - some even donated by him as an outright gift. The very first PEMCO unit was the gift of our Synod's churches with the participation of Church World Service in 1967 through the efforts of the Synod President, who at that time was a member of the Church World Service.
