CALVIN SYNOD HERALD- 2 -AMERIKAI MAGYAR REFORMÁTUSOK LAPJA FRONTISPIECE DESIGN Explanatory description by the publisher: THE MARCH OFTRUTH by Dr. Stephen Szabó In this most interesting book, Dr. Szabó has immortalized the twenty great heroes of the Reformation period whose images are carved in stone in Rietchel's monument at Worms and Bouchard-Landowski’s at Geneva. Around each of these great men has been woven the most interesting episode of his life, many of them tidbits of history that one does not find in any other book. The aim of the author is to make the reader see what Savonarola saw, to know what Wyclif knew, to believe what Knox believed, and to make him feel what Luther felt, and to will what Calvin willed. While these miniatures are the stories of individuals, at the same time the reader is given a fine picture of the great men, events and movements of the mighty Reformation. We who love Washington and Jefferson and Lincoln should love just as much the heroes who dedicated their lives to laying the foundation for the principles for which our heroes worked. No pains have been spared to obtain accurate information so that the reader may follow these noble examples in the fight for liberty of conscience and victory of truth. Here is an opportunity to learn with real enjoyment the story of the Reformation as pictured in the lives of men who lived and died for that great cause. Every biographical sketch in this book is highlighted with a full-page likeness of the subject. Four English versions were published by Eerdmans in the U.S.A., a Dutch version in Holland, portions in Hungarian, and a Chinese version is now under preparation. OUR ANNUAL SYNOD MEETING MAY 11-14, 1998 LIGONIER, PENNSYLVANIA The Annual Constitutional Meeting of our Calvin Synod (Conference of the United Church of Christ) will be held from the 11th of May through the 14th in Ligonier, PA, with the Rt. Rev. Dr. Francis Vitéz bishop presiding. The meeting will once again traditionally start at the chapel of the Bethlen Home on Moriah Hill. There will be an Opening Worship Service and Holy Communion on the first day and will continue in town at the Ramada Inn as it has in the past. This Annual Meeting of our congregations is the Annual Convention for the legislative, administrative and jurisdictional powers invested in the Synod. “HIS TRUTH IS MARCHING ON” By Dr. Stephen Szabó I am writing these lines, while still in my boots, as a personal explanation of the Frontispiece of our present Issue. It may seem selfish to place my own book’s cover page on my own publication. But it is not! I chose the title from the “Hymn of the Republic”. It represents ‘Truth’s March’ through the lives of 20 heroes of our Faith. So I really do not consider the book as only mine, but rather as “OUR BOOK'. There is an impressive parallel that this book and my Grand Trial of St. Stephen’s right hand in 1934-36 in Hungary, which ended as a victorious vindication of Protestant Truth by Regent Horthy’s erasure of the Trial and order to burn all documents. The legal meaning: there was no such trial in Hungary! At the beginning phases of the Trial, the General Conventus of the Reformed Church of Hungary, with Bishop Dezső Balthazar presiding, declared the Trial as "our trial", and shed This year’s meeting is especially important because of the forthcoming elections. We will hold our elections for all Synodical Offices for the coming three years. Attendance by all our ministers and one lay voting delegate from each constituting congregation is a must. NO CONGREGATION SHOULD BE LEFT OUT FROM THE PROCEEDINGS AT THIS HISTORIC TIME! □oa Preparatory Meetings for the ANNUAL SYNOD MEETING were held by all four classes under their deans presiding at East, West, Central and Lakeside. The Synodical Council held a fourday-long preparatory meeting on March 16-19 in the meeting rooms of the Holiday Inn of Elyria, Ohio, with Bishop Dr. Francis Vitéz presiding. Simultaneously, our “Church and Ministry” committee also held it preparatory meeting with Rev. Albert Kovács presiding. Such well planned preparations will have to bear good fruits for the benefit of all our constituting congregations. Ahead with God’s speed! out every penny for the “Church’s Trial”. So it - indeed - was not mine... it was ours. The same holds true for “The March of Truth” in my mind and in my heart! I honestly believe it! “Here I stand and I cannot do otherwise!” (Luther at Worms).
