Oct. 5, 1864, Alsósztregova). Hungarian poet whose reputation rests on his ambitious poetic drama Az ember tragédiája (1861; The Tragedy of Man). He is often considered to be Hungary’s greatest philosophical poet. Madách’s masterpiece, Az ember tragédiája, is a Faust-like drama in 15 acts covering the past and future of humankind. The central characters, Adam and Eve, appear throughout the play in the guise of famous historical personalities. They act out humanity’s tragic destiny in their constant stuggle with Lucifer. Though the drama was intended for reading, its production at the Budapest National Theater in 1883 was the first of many succesful performances. (PRESERVE OUR CHRISTIAN FREEDOM AGAINST THE ATTACKS OF THE ACLU! For four years, the ACLU has been hounding a brave and godly man, Alabama Judge Roy Moore, for opening his county court sessions with prayer and for displaying the Ten Commandments. They threatened him for two years, then filed a lawsuit against him in 1995. But this honorable man has defied the plotting ACLU - and we applaud him. Even after the ACLU won a ruling by another judge which PROHIBITED Judge Moore and all other Alabama judges from allowing prayer in their courtrooms... ...Judge Moore boldly DEFIED the ACLU - declaring he would continue to display the Ten Commandments, open jury organization sessions with prayer... and let the chips fall where they may! Judge Moore has vowed to fight this case all the way to the United States Supreme Court. We have already helped Judge Moore with a portion of his very significant legal fees, and we have run a major ad in his defense in the Alabama press, which resulted in over 10,000 signatures on petitions in his support.
