CALVIN SYNOD HERALD-4-REFOMATÜSOK LAPJA Sherry Re-Elected as UCC President Paul H. Sherry was elected July 19 to his second four-year term as president of the 1.6 million member United Church of Christ. Sherry received the unanimous vote of 744 delegates to the chuch's General Synod. Also elected to a second four-year term was Doris R. Powell, the UCC's director of finance and treasurer. Sherry's and Powell's re-elections were uncontested. Their new terms start in October. Both are full-time officers, based at the church's naitonal offices in Cleveland. In accepting his nomination, Sherry pledged to "engage the church, in every setting, in honest and vigorous theological labor,'1 to "help shape a church for all people," to embrace in "beloved community" those who suffer, to strengthen the body of the church by building ties to the congregations of the UCC and their pastors and to participate ecumenically in the "church universal." Sherry assured the delegates to the 19th biennial Synod that he would "work alongside you to combat racism, sexism, classism, the ugliness of homophobia, social injustice and the scourge of war. I will stand alongside those who are oppressed. I will hear their cries. And I will challenge this church to seek justice, love mercy and walk humbly with our God." According to UCC minister Jane Vennard, the gatherings are being planned as prayerful and worshipful acts, not intended to interfere with the program or to disrespect the Pope. I Hod fi Thought ] I had a thought, and it was in the night, half way between my sleeping and a dream: and it was valuable. Could I but write it down correctly, clearly, things would seem completed in some areas sages left ambiguous, uncertain or ignored. It was a thought so brilhant and so deft (as I remember it!) rather like a chord found transcendent after aimless long toying with piano keys or strings; or like a stag, large and intensely strong that from a hidden crevice suddenly springs to a peak and stardes all around by being more important than the sky. I marveled, then, that it had not been found long ago, it was so plain, and I so easily had found it! Then I woke. In the cold impersonal light of day the thought I valued writhed like wisps of smoke through acres on acres of trees, and slipped away. Since then, though I've tried, I've found no laws to comer it, or to suggest its shape. And lam tantalized, wondering what it was, and troubled by the ease of its escape.... Helen Harringon To Bring The Essence Home All I hear is the night train crossing the Brookfields, miles away, the whole time that it takes to saunter clear across the lawn, inspect a daisy with my dog, and amble back again. Sometimes it takes a certain foil of sound to bring the essence of a stillness home. Betty Pualwan Paul H. Sherry
