CALVIN SYNOD HERALD-2 -REFORMÁTUSOK LAPJA -------------CALVIN SYNOD NEWS------------OUR ANNUAL SYNODICAL MEETING May 19—22, Ligonier, PA The Fifty-Fourth Annual Meeting of the Calvin Synod, Conference of the United Church of Christ, will be held from the 19th of May to the 22nd in the traditional meeting place of the Lord Ligonier Motel in Ligonier, Pa. This is the constitutional meeting of our congregations with legislative, administrational and jurisdictional powers invested in our Synod for the benefit of all local churches. This year’s meeting will be again a historical meeting with a very important and heavy Agenda. Our democratic system of church government operates through the balanced power exercised by the equality of elected ministerial and lay delegates from all our local congregations based in nine of states in America. It is indeed extremely important that all lay delegates (one from each congregation) should accompany the pastor for this legislative meeting. The Bishop’s usual letter with all details will follow this official Announcement in a short time. The order of Classis Meetings in preparation for the Annual Synod Meeting Eastern Classis will meet on Febr. 23, Sun. 3 P.M. in the New York church, Rev. Béla Póznán, dean presiding. The new hymnal will reflect the “wideranging diversity of the UCC”, says Ansley Coe Throckmorton, general secretary of the education and publication division. Many consultants will be used, to ensure that a “wide variety of issues will be considered”. FOURTY YEARS IN THE LORD’S VINEYARD (Rev. Aaron Elek, retired) After having served our churches ever since he finished his theological studies, Rev. Elek retired from the active ministry as of last year. His last pastorate was the Cleveland West Side Hungarian Reformed Church, where he built that wonderful structure for the congregation which previously was located at the West 32nd street. The relocation was an exceptionally trying period in the life of the church, but Pastor Elek “had always kept his cool” and this attitude paid off beautifully in keeping the various factions within the fellowship which made the building project a reality. His previous churches were, Johnstown, PA, Leechburg, PA, Fairport Harbor, OH, then Cleveland for 28 years. He is a native Hungarian, whose ancestral family roots go back to Reformation time. Attended elementary school in his hometown, Hódmezővásárhely. He also attended there the middle school, both of the Reformed Christian institutions. He received his theological education at Budapest. After that he came to Princeton Theol. Sem. in New Jersey on an ecumenical scholarship. He also spent one year at the Western Theol. Seminary in Pittsburgh. Pastor Elek held many positions in our Synod, Dean of the Classis, Deputy Bishop of Calvin Synod. Our Synod honored him at the last Synodical Meeting in Ligonier, PA upon his retirement. His congregation elected him to be the Pastor Emeritus and Lakeside Classis made him an Honorary Dean. He will be living in Cleveland, Ohio and will be available for substitute services, since he was always fond of preaching. He served on the radio every Saturday with a half hour meditation for 12 years. Rev. Elek has been married to the former Irene B. Urban (her father was also a Hung. Ref. minister) for over 40 years. Their marriage is blessed by three daughters. Eva Fisher, Laura Abe and Lisa Ammerman. They have four grandchildren.
