With Christian Love, Dr. Stephen Szabó Transylvanian Foundation Encourages Staying Home The International Transylvanian Foundation has held a meeting. László Tőkés, bishop of Nagyvárad, who was for months recuperating from the injuries he suffered during an auto accident, has rejoined the work of the Foundation. The Foundation has asked the governments of Hungary and Romania to begin talks aimed at eliminating tension and guaranteeing basic human rights. The main goal of the Foundation is to help refugees return to Romania. At the meeting the delegates decided to issue a plea urging Transylvanians to stay home. Transylvanian Refugees Organize After several delays, Transylvanian refugees living in Hungary were invited to hold talks and to canvass new members so that the Free Political Alliance of Transylvanian Refugees could officially be formed. László Dudás — a former representative in the Romanian Parliament, an original founder of the Democratic Alliance of Romanian Hungarians, and a man who was harshly attacked in March and sentenced “to death"by the Vatra nationalistextremist organization in August 1990 issued a statement in the name of the organization. The most important task of our newly formed organization is to forge solidarity among Transylvanian refugees scattered all over the world and to encourage them to preserve their Transylvanian heritage. The number of Transylvanian refugees has already reached a one million mark and we must grant them appropriate aid in assisting them in their cultural and political activities. The Symbolic 100th Anniversary is to be followed by the 100th of the First Church’s actual legal organization Invitation letters were already mailed out by The First Hungarian Reformed Church, 10706 Buckeye Road, Cleveland, Ohio 44104. Some words from the letter: “It gives us a great deal of pleasure to invite you to the 100th anniversary celebration of the oldest Hungarian background Protestant congregation in the United States. The Hungarian Reformed Church of Cleveland, Ohio was organized on May 3, 1891. We will observe our 100th anniversary on Saturday, May 4, 1991 in a jubilant worship service beginning at 3:30 p.m. and a festive banquet at 5:30 p.m. We would be greatly honored by your presence. If the above main events do not fit into your schedule, we will also have a historical presentation on Friday evening May 3rd, and an 11 a.m. worship service on Sunday May 5th followed by a light lunch. You are very cordially invited to these events as well." William E. Nyerges, Frank A. Endrei, Assistant Pastor pastor Chairman, Century Committee Qwotes from Our Bishop’s Letter This letter has been sent to every Conference Minister of The United Church of Christ, to every pastor of The Calvin Synod, to some Presbytery Executives, to some Dutch Reformed Churches and to personal friends, succinctly, to all those whom I respect and trust as “fellow servants in the harness” for liberation. We, The United Church of Christ, claim to be a „liberation church”. In our human history, the magnificent rose of liberation always blooms from the red-blood-buds of self-sacrifices. It certainly was true of Christ and it certainly is true of the 80,000 deaths in Rumania. We, as a liberation church, are our brothers’ keepers. Our distressed brothers in Rumania desparately need our help. We, The Calvin Synod Conference, have a great number of personal contacts of Reformed pastors in Rumania. For this very reason, we implore you, in the name of our Lord, please remit us to orchestrate the helping hands of our churches. Our track record of over $60,000 to the Rumanian refugees, speaks for itself. We do not want even a penny to get lost, to go to administrative expenses, or not to reach the everyday folks in need. We have the contacts and “knowhow” to deliver funds directly to pastors of local congregations, in order to reach those in desparate need. Please, try to put administrative arguments and pride aside. Please, notify the congregations of your Conference to show their liberating care for the downtrodden in Rumania and send their contributions designated “Rumanian Relief Fund” to our Treasurer, The Rev. Lajos Medgyesi, 607 Plum Street, Fairport Harbor, Ohio, 44077. For any and all help, God bless you and accept our utmost thanks in behalf of those, who paid a very high price for liberation in Rumania. Zoltán D. Szűcs Bishop
