CALVIN SYNOD HERALD-2 -REFORMÁTUSOK LAPJA CALVIN SYNOD NEWS Calvin Synod’s Annual Meeting in Ligoner on May 21, 22, 23 The Annual Meeting is the governing and legislative meeting of our constituting congregations. This year’s meeting is also election meeting. The presence of all elected delegates is therefore not only desirable but mandatory in the interest of our Synod. Biblical Witness Fellowship Report on meeting in Royal Oak, Detroit, MI — April 3-6,1991 The Spring meeting of the Biblical Witness Fellowship Board — UCC was held at Emmanuel-Bethel Church, in Royal Oak, Detroit, Michigan on April 3-6, 1991. Rev. Larry Wood, president of the BWF, and his local church hosted the board of directors. The Biblical Witness Fellowship represents evangelical Christians in the UCC who believe in the authority of the Bible, salvation through Jesus Christ, and fulfilling the great commission in Matthew 28:18-20 entrusted to the church. In effect it is a grass-roots renewal movement acting as the conscience of the denomination out of necessity, and finding itself at odds with some of the social Gospel espoused by the UCC. The contention is with the liberal philosophy and mindset that is used in response to social controversies affecting the church. Others are considering alternatives. Also at issue is the way mission monies have been spent and accounted by the denomination. Many churches had stopped giving because the local churches want to have a say in how and where such donations are to be allocated. For this reason, BWF churches support over 130 missionaries both abroad and nationally. Still another area of contention is the treatment of evangelical seminarians and their placement. There is an alleged neglect and open hostility to place evangelical students within some UCC Conference churches. For this reason, the BWF is seeking to establish a relationship with certain seminaries, such as Gordon-Conwell in Massachusetts, where UCC evangelical students would be supported by local churches. The Congregational brothers and sisters of the BWF would like to see local church involvement and decision making in the ordination process. These are the main issues currently being addressed by the BWF. There is extensive praying about each as we seek God’s guidance for renewing the denomination from within and setting its feet back on the path of witnessing the gospel of salvation through Jesus Christ. I am proud to represent the Calvin Synod among such friends. Rev.
