Problémáink voltak. íme néhány: 1. Közöny a gyülekezeti előfizetések emelésével kapcsolatban; 2. Közöny, nem küldjük be híreinket s a kért történelmi anyagot; 3. Nyomtatási költség emelkedése. 4. Postaköltség emelkedése; 5. Határidők elmulasztása, lapzárta; 6. Stb. — Mégis, mindezek ellenére élt a lap.

Ő maga írta: „Nyolcvan éves lapunk drága kincs kezünkben. Igazi értékét és hiányát akkor éreznénk meg, amikor már nem lenne! A lap amerikai, magyar és református. A szabad világ szabad, magyar és református szava. Ne hagyjuk elveszni történelmi lapunkat!”

This is how Rev. Paul Kántor himself viewed his own editorial service:

“I visualize the Calvin Synod Herald as a modern missionary that can reach the hearts and homes in behalf of our Lord. None of our congregations or ministers should remain neutral or unconcerned about the work of our oldest publication. Any congregation that does not subscribe for at least the consistory members and the officers of their organizations, or at least 10% of its membership does a disservice to both the Calvin Synod Herald and the neglected church members. How can we build good relationship with our people without communications? How can we participate in the Calvin Synod properly without seeing, hearing and reading? We need the help of our ministers and church leaders to make the Calvin Synod Herald a challenging publication, which could positively affect and help our readers. Can we count on your support?”

He is the one, who computerized our Paper, which involved a tremendous amount of work. He raised the total number to 2,012 copies. Quoting some of his own words might be a lesson to our readers:

“We still have a few churches with no subscriptions at all in spite of the fact that at our last Synod meeting it was accepted that the Consistory members and the presidents of organizations should subscribe from each congregation. I have found that where the pastor is willing to help with getting subscribers, there we have several, but when a pastor ignores several of my letters in which I ask him to make an announcement about the Reformátusok Lapja, and he does not do it, there we have none. I simply do not believe that a willing pastor could not get at least one subscriber from his congregation. Thank God the majority of our ministers have

been helping unselfishly. The credit for the recent growth of our church paper belongs to these people.”

In order to characterize Rev. Koloman Ludwig’s short term as editor it is indeed proper to quote his own words from his 1989 Report to Synod:

“This past year the Calvin Synod Herald did not accomplish what it should do, that is, to be a constant communication tool for the Synod.

For this the Editor takes full responsibility, as it is the editor’s responsibility to produce a paper. However, the editor was not able to produce a timely paper this past year, and this causes difficulties for the Bishop and for the Synod.

This past year has been not too different from the previous year; money problems and time constraints have kept the paper from being issued on schedule. Hopefully the new editor will be able to rectify these problems.

The new editor should be prepared to spend a minimum of 170 hours per issue in preparation for each publication, and be prepared to be not only editor but author. Every “editor” in the past has asked the churches of the Synod to submit material concerning local church functions. All that have been submitted in the last two year period have been printed; if your church was not among them, its because nothing was sent in. Of course that takes the purpose out of having a Calvin Synod Herald.

As of January, 1989, all churches now owe for their group subscriptions; some were paid through 1988, and several owe for 1987. Please help the new editor out by giving him a budget to work with.

Fortunately some suggestions of the former editor were since materialized by Synod. The present editor is in no position to write about himself about his second drafting endeavor to the editorship of our paper and at the very end of this 90th Anniversary year of “Reformátusok Lapja”. This portion of time is not history as yet. This is the Present! Let future tell the story of the present at a later time!

In our bilingual life we have to shift from one language to the other often. It is our sorrow that we have not enough place to print everything always in both languages.

De végezetül a jelen szerkesztő hadd mondja el a legutóbbi négy szerkesztő munkájával kapcsolatban, hogy Lapunk soha sem volt pénzkeresési alkalom és sohasem lesz! De Istennek hála hitveseink és gyermekeink felmérhetetlen segítő közreműködéséért, mely nélkül nincs és nem lehet eredmény! (Vitéz Vilma, Kántor Sarolta, Szabó Margaret és legvégül Szabó Violet és mindezek gyermekeinek fáradságos és fárasztó munkája az érdemek koronája. Ennek a hiánya volt az, ami az előző időszakban Ludwig Kálmán éveinek közbeeső hiányát lélektanilag megmagyarázza!) A Jelenről pedig beszéljen a Lap maga és nyilatkozzanak annak olvasói.

Kettőt azonban mégis kell, hogy elmondjon maga a jeleni szerkesztő mindannyiunk nagy boldogságára: elértük történelmünk legmagasabb számát azzal, hogy kilencvenesztendei ünnepi közös számunkat 4200 példányban nyomtattuk és küldtük olvasóinknak és hogy a nagy történelmi változások lehetővé tették Lapunknak végre az elszakított magyar területek reformátusságához való testvéri bevonulását egy emberöltőn áti erőszakos elszakadottság után.

Lapunk — Isten kegyelméből — most valójában tőlünk elvárt missziói küldetést tölt be a Történelem viharsarkában!!!
