CALVIN SYNOD HERALD- 8 -REFORMÁTUSOK LAPJA zation of the spirit and ethos of the ecumenical movement of that time. The United Church of Christ was duly constituted on June 25, 1957 by the regularly chosen representatives of the Congregational Christian Churches and of the Evangelical and Reformed Church, in a Uniting General Synod held in Cleveland, Ohio. The 1963 Magyar Synod Meeting was held in Ligonier, PA on May 20- 22. It was the Silver Anniversary meeting of the Magyar Synod. Since the denomination notified us that the subsidizing ‘Reformátusok Lapja’ as well as the German language ‘Friedensbote’ will cease by July, the outgoing president recommended to the Synod to save the paper. In knowledge of the fact that the planned threefold union failed, he presented a paper merger plan of all factions to assure, at least, a working togetherness in lieu of legal unity. The plan was to merge our ‘Reformátusok Lapja’, the Reformed Federation’s ‘Testvériség’ and the ‘Free Church’s Magyar Egyház.’ The Synod voted for it and offered $7,000.00 for the project. The Federation’s Board of Directors meeting also approved and voted $22,000.00 for the project. Likewise did the ‘Free Church’ and voted $5,000.00. Our Synod was most enthusiastic and most unanimous in full knowledge that giving up a Hungarian Organ, after the collapse of the legal Union, would be the assassination of all Hungarian dreams and hopes. Using Rev. Kálmán Csia’s words: “It would be an ambush against the triumphant faith of our fathers”. But unfortunately this great Dream among many others also remained unfulfilled!!! ELMER E. VARGO is the new national President of the William Penn Association A well-known son of our Synod will lead the new administration of our largest Fraternal Organization in Magyar America. He was solemnly installed into his office at the Association’s headquarters in Pittsburgh. After accepting the oath of office, Mr. Vargo said the Association will keep moving forward if all employees and officers join him in practicing what he called the “three C’s”: commitment, cooperation and communication. Mr. Vargo has been active in the fraternal life insurance business for the past 33 years. Before his election as WPA national secretary four years ago, he served as Vice President and Secretary of the Hungarian Reformed Federation of America. We congratulate the Calvin Synod Herald — Reformátusok Lapja as it celebrates 90 years of continuous service to its church and to Hungarian Reformed people in the United States, Hungary and throughout the world. May it continue to serve its mission well for many years to come. And to the thousands of devoted readers of the Reformátusok Lapja, we extend our sincere wishes for a joyous Easter holiday.
