CALVIN SYNOD HERALD-11-REFORMATUSOK LAPJA Though experiencing war, discrimination and poverty in his early years, then the difficulties every immigrant faced in his adopted land, Victor G. Orth never let any of these evils shake his foundation, his determination, his Faith in Christ. And his work, his whole life, were marked by his true love and devotion toward his family, his congregation, his people. Hate, anger and resentment were not to be found in him; they were incompatible with the "foundation". The love of Jesus his Saviour could never conceive these, could never allow these to become part of his life. This is the man whom God called home, to be with the very author of the kind of life Gyozo lived. Rev. Orth retired from the active ministry on February 12, 1987, due to a lengthy illness; his last public service was at Christmas, 1986, when he baptized his granddaughters, Ivy and Elizabeth Puskas. In the summer of 1988 he retired to a home near his son in Lake Village, Indiana, near where he was later to be laid to rest. He is survived by his wife, Jolán, daughters Martha Novak, Mary Vise and Ildikó Ludes, sons Dr. Lee J. Orth and Victor E.J. Orth, 16 grandchildren and six greatgrandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Rev. Imre Orth, and sister Irene Kardos, both in Transylvania, Romania. His Christian love will be missed by us all. (Koloman Karl Ludwig) THE 1988 CHRISTMAS FUND As we prepare for our Christmas celebration, we in the United Church of Christ remember our retired ministers and their spouses. Most of them, we know, will celebrate a merry Christmas and look forward to a happy new year. But for some, financial emergencies will arise. In most cases, the needs of our retired ministers will be met through savings and health and retirement plans, but this isn’t always true, especially amongst the clergy who have retired from the Calvin Synod. Often, their resources are not enough. That’s when we can help with our gifts to the Christmas Fund. In addition, retired pastors or widowed spouses designated by the Bishop and the Council as appropriate recipients will receive a gift check. After a grant for supplementing small pensions, and expenses, all remaining funds will be used to assist qualifying retired ministers, surviving spouses, and lay workers with the cost of our health benefits plan. This year's Christmas Fund theme comes from the Apostle Paul’s letter to the Galatians. Let us work for the good of all, he wrote, but especially "those who are of the household of faith.” Let us remember our retired ministers this year through the 1988 Christmas Fund for the Veterans of the Cross.
