THE 1987 CHRISTMAS FUND VETERANS OF THE CROSS During the Christmas season, our thoughts turn instinctively to our familes “back home’’. As we address the season’s greetings to our loved ones far away, we can take comfort in the assurance that there is a caring pastor close by them. But many of these "blessed...servants" who once shared our joys and sorrows in a lifetime of ministry are now retired...some without adequate income, health insurance...facing the new year with the fear that their means will not prove adequate to their needs. The United Church of Christ has a special Christmas Fund and an Emergency Fund for the VETERANS OF THE CROSS, used to assist retired pastors to supplement their relatively small pensions, and to help in paying medical insurance. Several of our own retired ministers and their widows, traditionally having been among the lowest compensated of any denomination, find that the VETERANS OF THE CROSS Christmas Check is a welcome, bright moment in their year. Having served before pensions were common for ministers, they live on small savings and Social Security benefits. This year, open your hearts and pocketbooks for them, those who served your churches; designate a mission donation this season to the United Church of Christ VETERANS OF THE CROSS Christmas fund. Minister Roughed up in Romania A Hungarian human rights organization based in Toronto has registered an official protest with Ottawa over the rough teatment they say a Canadian church minister received at the hands of Romanian security police and border officials. Rev. Aladar Komjáthy, a United Church minister in Montreal, said he was detained for three hours at the Hungarian border by Romanian police, who strip-searched him, seized a roll of film, a manuscript and several artifacts he had been given as gifts during his visit to Romania last August. “Obviously they thought 1 was a spy”, Komjáthy said in a telephone interview from Montreal, where he is minister of the Hungarian United Church and a professor at McGill University. The Hungarian Human Rights Foundation is asking Ottawa to help Komjáthy get the confiscated materials returned and an official apology from the Romanian ambassador to Canada, a foundation spo kindkesman said. Komjáthy, who is an American of Hungarian descent, had been in Romania for a week. He attended a theological conference in Bucahrest and visited friends and various churches in Transylvania. “1 went to Romania to find out the actual situation,” he said. “Officially I was a tourist. But obviously they were aware what kind of people 1 met, writers, artists and theologians." Komjáthy said the film contained only photographs of a Romanian friend’s vacation and that he was taking it to Hungary to be developed because Romanian has no facilities for color film. The seized manuscript was a revised version of the Hungarian liturgy. (Dana Flavelle / Toronto Star) (Editor’s note: Unfortunately, this is not the first report of its kind from this area, once part of Hungary, and still the home of millions of decendents of Hungarians who are strangers in their own land because they choose to keep the language and heritage of their ancestors.)
