CALVIN SYNOD HERALD — 2 — REFORMÁTUSOK LAPJA Following the communion service of the 48th Annual Meeting of the Calvin Synod Bishop Király is greeting Rev. and Mrs. Andrew Harto, who were visiting from North Carolina. The Rev. Andrew E. Harto, 72, pastor emeritus of Calvin United Church of Christ and a member of Toledo civic and church circles for nearly two decades, died Aug. 1 in his home in Matthews, N.C. Mr. Harto, formerly of Bakewell Street, was born in Hungary and came to the United States at the age of 8. He was a graduate of Bloomfield College of Bloomfield, N.J., where he studied theology at Bloomfield Seminary and did graduate work at Princeton University. Ordained in 1940, Mr. Harto served 2*/2 years at the Hungarian Reformed Church, Phoenixville, Pa., where he was president of the Ministerial Association, dean of the vacation church school, and chairman of the victory clothing drive for which he received a citation from President Harry Truman. He also served as pastor at John Calvin Hungarian Reformed church, Perth Amboy, N.J. Rev. Harto’s first pastorate was at South River, N.J. He also served 12 years at South Norwalk, CT. In 1959, Mr. Harto came to Calvin United Church of Christ, 1946 Bakewell St. During his 20 years there, he was president of the East Toledo Ministerial Association, and chairman of the committee on evangelism for the Toledo Council of Churches. The church, formerly known as the Hungarian Evangelical and Reformed Church, was changed in 1962 by the congregation to Calvin United Church of Christ. Mr. Harto was an adviser to the Birmingham Neighborhood Coalition; president of the Community Organizing Sponsoring Committee; a member of the assembly and board of directors of the Ohio Council of Churches, and president of the National Hungarian Ministerial Association. He served 14 years as chairman of the committee on Christian education for the Calvin Synod of the United Church of Christ and was the synodical youth director at the church 14 years. He was a member of and adviser to the National Youth Fellowship of the Evangelical and Reformed Church and was a delegate to the World Christian Education Conference. Upon his retirement in 1979, the congregation at Calvin United Church of Christ voted him pastor emeritus. He moved to North Carolina shortly thereafter and served as an interim and substitute pastor at churches in the Charlotte, N.C. area. Surviving are his wife Margaret, daughters, Mrs. Martha Kozacik and Ethel; sisters, Mrs. Mary Orlick and Mrs. Julia Kadas, and brother, Val. Poll Taken on Fund Preliminary returns of a questionnaire sent to Pension Board members show slightly less than half opting for alternative South Africa-free investment funds. PB executive vice president John D. Ordway told the UCC Implementation Committee on the Pronouncement on South Africa that,, slightly more than half’ of the respondents wish to stay in the present fund. About half of the 15,000 clergy and lay members have responded. The Committee was created by General Synod to help implement its pronouncement calling on all church agencies to divest. The PB have resisted, claiming that the „prudent man rule”prohibits non-financial criteria in investment decisions. In June, PB trustees voted „in principle ” to create .an alternative investment fund and polled members to find out how large such a „restricted investment funds" portfolio might be. PB secretary Edmund G. Tortora says the early returns indicate there are enough people in both funds „to make them viable. ” This fall members will be asked to make a binding decision as to which fund they will use. Meanwhile, opposition to an alternative fund is mounting.
