CALVIN SYNOD HERALD — 2 — REFORMÁTUSOK LAPJA CALVIN SYNOD NEWS “Rest a While.” In the recent issue of “The Christian Ministry” there is a cartoon of a minister who says to a colleague, “My church calendar is so filled I can’t schedule a burnout until 1998.” Unfortunately this is not a joke: many of us are a “workaholic” to that extent! But our Lord thinks differently. When the apostles “had no leisure even to eat” on account of feverish activities, He said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a lonely place, and rest a while.” (Mk. 6:31) So steal away with Jesus and have a happy rest! Mrs. Helen Kosa Beretz, the wife of the late Bishop Aprad L. Beretz died on June 10,1984 at the age ot 66. Pastors of Western Classis were present at the memorial service, and Bishop Butosi wrote letters of condolances to her mother and daughters. Our youth camp promises to be another “great” event judging from the preliminary reports. Pastors are asked to make last efforts in these days so that every one of our churches would send representatives. As you know the conference is scheduled for Aug. 12—18 at Mount Pleasant, PA. The camp fee is $100. For further information call: Dr. Medyesy: 203-269-4827. “Come on, Feel the Noise!” ’At the National Youth Event (UCC) to be held July 29 through Aug. 2 at the University of Illinois, Urbana, Miss Sarah J. Butosi will represent our Synod, but visitors are welcome, too, for July 30—31 and Aug. 1—2. For information call: 217— 344-5091. The second national meeting of UCC. Woment starts on July 12 in Milwaukee, WI. Hopefully some women from the Western Classis will attend it with Synod subsidy. In Ligonier, PA. there will be several important gatherings in September! (a) The National Presbyters Association will meet on Sept. 2—3; (b) The Am. Hung. Ref. Ministerial Association has already mailed invitation and agenda for Sept. 3—4; (c) The Temporary Administrative Council of the Hungarian Reformed Church Uniting intends to meet on Sept. 4 from 2 P.M. to 9 P.M. with possible committee meetings on the 5th; (d) The Bethlen Home Board of Directors come together on Sept. 5, followed by the meeting of the Bd. of Directors of the Hung. Ref. Fed. of America on the succeding days; (e) The Convention of the latter organization is announced for Sept. 17—21 also in Ligonier. — We urge elders, pastors and other leaders to take advantage of these momentous gatherings — prayerfully! The Insurance Advisory Board of the UCC Conferences will contact all our churches during the summer to provide information and solicit participation in accordance with our Synod resolution. Please, take this communication very seriously as our Synod has already committed $4000 to this program! Vacant churches: □ Manville, NJ. Administrator: Dean Zoltán Király. (No decision yet.) □ Dayton, OH. Dean Aaron Elek is in charge, but no election yet. □ Springdale, PA. Dean Nicholas Novak administers it (D.L. Borsay supplying), but no decision yet. □ South Norwalk, CT. Rev. Z. Szabó leaves at the end of August, but the Pulpit Committee is still searching. Call the Bishop! □ Ottawa, Canada. Rev. L. Vietorisz retires at the end of Aug. They are looking for a young bilingual minister. For information call L. Vietorisz: 613—224-4583. Pastoral Compensation in our Synod for 1984 shows the following data: Cash Salary — under $5,000 6 pastors, $5-10,000:9, $10-15,000:14, $15—20,000: 5 pastors. Total: 34 of whom 15 received at least $14,000. Social security: 13 congregations paid ranging from $600 to $2,800. Pension: 26 congregations reported paying from $800 to $4,386. Hospitalization plan: 25 churches reported ranging from $111 to $3,800. Car Allowance: 5 pastors receive under $1000, 8 between $1—2,000, 6 between $2—3,000, 5 above $3,000. Other benefits: 16 congregations reported $300 to $7,000 range. Thus the Total Compensation (in addition to parsonage or housing allowance) shows 5 churches paying under $5,000, 7 between $5—10,000,5 between $10—15,000 7 between $15—20,000, 8 between $20— 25,000, 1 between $25—30,000, and 2 above $30,000 for the pastoral services. We share these data now when most of our churches prepare the 1985 budget with the following requests: (a) review your pastor’s compensation with the knowledge that of the 39 conferences Calvin Synod is the 37th; (b) Pension contributions should be 14% of the “salary basis which is 130% of the Basic Cash Salary; (c) For Social Security purposes, pastors are classified as “self-employed”, which means that they have to pay the “employer’s part” too; thus the rate will be 11.8% in 1985. Available is a new, free audiovisual kit for each congregation, entitled a “Let Our Faces Sing”. It includes a 16-minute sound, color filmstrip, 4 full-color posters, a ready-to-use mission program, and other material to interpret OCWM. Order this FREE kit by phoning toll-free 800-325- 7061. (Ask for code number SCR-18A) Also available “Lift Up Your Hearts: Worship Traditions in the UCC”. The four, roughly half-hour presentations are in color either in the 16 mm sound film format or on half-inch VHS videocasettes. Call Barbara Chartrand: 612—870-9861. “Hidden Histories in the UCC” (with chapter on Calvin Synod written by J. Butosi) may be purchased at a special prepublication price of $7.95 each until Sept. 1 from The Pilgrim Press, 132 W. 31st St., New York, NY 10001. (Pay with order!) Bad news from Romania: only 5% of the students at the Bolyay University can be Hungarian! (Numerus clausus) Other recent measures were reported by Bishop Butosi to U.S. Senate Committee of Foreign Relations on June 12, 1984! Just briefly: Dr. László Berzeviczy is recuperating after an operation . . . Mrs. Zoltán Kovács is improving.
