CLERGY SALARIES The 1983 edition of “Church Financial Statistics and Related Data,” published by the National Council of Churches, includes a special report on clergy salaries in 1982 in eleven mainline Protestant denominations, including the United Church of Christ. One of the key findings of the report is that women clergy earn consistently less than men clergy. For pastors, the median salary for men was $20,000 to $22,000; for women it was $14,000 to $16,000. Salary differences of men and women clergy with the same number of years of experience were not studied. However, a comparison of salary ranges for men and women by age group showed that within the same age groupings, women clergy are paid consistently less than men clergy. QUOTE “I simply argue that the Cross be raised again at the centre of the market place as well as on the steeple of the church. I am recovering the claim that Jesus was not crucified in a Cathedral between two candles, but on a Cross between two thieves: on the town garbage heap; at a crossroad so cosmopolitan that they had to write his title in Hebrew and in Latin and in Greek... at the place where cynics talk smut, and thieves curse, and soldiers gamble. Because that is where he died. And that is what he died about. And that is where church (members) could be and what church (members) should be about. George Macleod, Quoted in KeyPak: January-June 1984
